Replica at Redhill, South Australia

On our way to Adelaide in South Australia, we passed through the small town of Redhill. It was formerly called Broughton as it is adjacent to the Broughton River. It once had a hotel, blacksmith, general store, school and several churches as well as other businesses but most of these have gone now. It was renamed as Redhill in 1940 and was for many years the terminus of the broad gauge branch railway which connected with the standard gauge Trans-Australian Railway. The link, when completed in 1938, meant three different gauges were sited there. The role of the heavy horse is remembered with this replica of a draught horse pulling a single furrow plough. Some places change so much over time don't they?

That's a great statue. You had posted a pic of you kids going to school on a horse. My mom and uncle up as farm kids too..and they walked until they got into HS. My uncle said he did ride his horse to school a time or two though as well!

Yes, my brother and sister rode to school for a while but they were quite a bit older than me.

@judyev it’s good that some people do a lot to preserve the memory of the past for us

Several towns have monuments to the part that the heavy horse played in opening up the country. It's good to see.

I like the statue very much. I like horses to look like horses, not cariactures.

@JudyEv wow.. you’d think that they would be more friendly to visitors in their town.. but maybe they’re the only ones left because they don’t like people..

It seems to be just the road-house there now plus a couple of houses and they weren't very friendly so we won't bother going back. If too many think like us it will become even less populated.

@epiffanie It could be. They were just very offhand so if they are like that to everyone, most people would just go somewhere else if they had the choice.

Back in times in Italy not the horses but the bulls were used to pull the furrow plough.

@JudyEv In the mountain areas it was bulls all the time, they still do the same in some areas right now, where it is too steep to use the machines. Here is an old photo from Tuscany (Italy).

@LadyDuck It was hard work for man and beast wasn't it? Thanks for loading the photo. I love looking at these old photos of farm activities.

We had bullock teams in Australia but not on individual farms for ploughing etc. The bullock teams were used to haul timber or big wagons loaded with grain, wool, goods, etc.

I agree. This is beautiful though. :) Something being left for posterity to remember and use in case oil disappears completely.

It was hard to get a good angle for the photo but it certainly looked very authentic from the road.

Love the photo. I think that those times were nice seeing the horses. When I see all the crazy drivers here I remember when my mom told me when she was little in the 1900s about 1917 as a little girl she always wanted her dad to treat her to a buggy ride. Those days there were no cars in Riga and it was not so polluted but my mom said even then people has such jokes as when all the horses in Riga fart, Riga smells

I'm sure many of the street smelt back in the days of horse-drawn vehicles.

Places do change with time. I imagine horses had to be very strong and sturdy to do that difficult ploughing.
