@1hopefulman Yes and I thought I can make it but most of the time I am unable to do it. I feel terribly sad.

@cacay1 Hi Erly. Yes po. That is why now I refrain from making promises most especially if I know I cannot fulfill them.

Hey Felix! I'm back. I don't like making promises as I don't want to give false hope to people. I don't want to disappoint them. I like giving them surprises. When I use the expression 'it's a promise,' people knew that I only say it in jest or when we're just kidding around and having some silly conversation. But when it's something serious, I don't make promises. I just tell them I'll try to and I will try my best.
I don't want to disappoint people as I don't want to be disappointed as well.

Welcome back! I'm like you! I don't want to give false hope and I don't like to get it either. When I was working I had a motto that I kept to myself that I would always promise a bit less than I knew I could deliver and gained the trust of my customers that they often referred their friends to me.

Yes, people expect us to keep out promises and our word. Then we have peoples that are unreasonable in their expectations.

Did you make a promise you couldn't keep? I have no respect for people who don't keep their promises. I never make a promise I can't keep and that is why I never make promises. Not even a New Years resolution. I like to remain true to myself and others.

People have great confidence in my word as I am a person of my word. I also rarely make promises as I know how unpredictable life can be and I hate to disappoint anyone.

Yes! True but when some unforeseen situation occurs then we can approach the person and make other arrangements so that they are not totally disappointed and devastated.

Yes, I keep my promises. Jesus said to let your Yes mean Yes and your No mean No, So I try not to make promises I may not be able to keep. If someone asks me if I can do something, I always say I will check and get back to them. I say no to lots of things when I am not certain I will feel like doing them when I’m very busy.
It is not a good feeling when someone makes a promise and does not keep it. It makes me not really believe them the next time.

So true! I would rater that someone doesn't make a promise then that they do and not keep it. Yes, God expects us to keep our word!

I feel as you do! Once a person does not keep one promise then they have lost the trust of honest people. Everything they say after that is suspect.

@1hopefulman I will be hypocrite if I will tell you it is okay especially if the particular promise meant a lot. But at the end of the day, you have to think if you want your day to end sourgraping and bitter or happy.

Well, I always do, but not sure if it is right... because I keep my promise even if it is not beneficial for me anymore.
I will force a person to keep the promise he made to get what I need.

What is the point of making a promise if one has no intention of keeping it? A promise is like a vow, a verbal guarantee. It an assurance that one will do what they say. No?

Yes, and some other people say: "A promise is a promise."
We should only make promises that we can keep. Though there can be some difficult situations at times that make it impossible for us to keep it but then we should give a good explanation to the person that we promised. It is only right and fair. What do you think?

I think keeping promises is very important. If someone cannot do it then there has to be a good reason why not. I try to keep my promises.

True! Unexpected and unforeseen things can come up that might prevent from fulfilling a promise. Then, we could let them know and make some other suitable arrangements.

Keeping promises, keeps your integrity intact. If you aren't able to keep it yourself, I believe you should either apologize for not keeping it, and make it up to them at another time; or if it is feasible, get someone else to keep the promise for you.
Example: Years ago I had someone promise to pick me up to take me to a meeting, because at the time I did not have a car. Something came up, and they were not able to... So they asked someone else to pick me up instead. So even though she did not personally do what she said she would do, she still kept her promise, by getting someone else to fulfill it for her.

Yes, unexpected and unforeseen things can happen that might prevent us from being able to do something we said we would do. Then, it is good to find a way of doing something we said we would do by finding someone else to do it.
