I cannot hear YOU: Really?!?

Let me share real a fact. Some non-native speakers say, “I cannot hear you.” It is a common sentence that’s being uttered during the class session. The mere fact, they do hear me. The question is, “Why?” They are not familiar with the English words being used. I had been observing this particular scenario in years now. It wasn’t simply knowing the vocabularies only. But also, they should know how to use them in making sentences. The Parts of Speech is also needed to consider. “Do you think learning vocabularies are needed to learn the English language?” “Have you ever wondered how difficult to learn a specific language?” “Can you speak other languages other than English?” Image Credit: pmchat.net

Hi Shav. Vocabularies are important and from there you will start to understand. I see them as the basics that will help in building sentences. I only know little Cebuano since my husband teaches me and a few of Mandarin. Speaking of that, I have not found a center for my dad and me to learn.

For me, I had learned the other languages by just listening. I had learned Basic Mandarin when working in China and Hong Kong before. I can also speak Russian when working with the local people in Tajikistan.

@Shavkat You are right, my friend. That is one benefit of working abroad as you learn to understand their language. You are multilingual. Tajikistan is near Kazakhstan?

What nationality's language is Urdu? I am sorry. I can also speak three dialects in our country. I never dare to learn the Korean language, despite teaching them before.

Yes, of course you need to know the words to speak a language, if not how can you understand full sentences? It's not so hard to lean a language, I speak several different languages. My native language is Italian, I speak English, French, Spanish, German and a bit of Portuguese.

@LadyDuck I think you are lucky to have a school that offers to learn other languages. In my country, we don't have. Unless, if we learn it through online.

I can only speak English and am a native speaker who has studied the language through the study of literature. It is the only language I can speak, though I studied French for two years in college.

It was really nice that you were able to learn the English language through literature. It must need a strong dedication to that. I do want to learn French in the future. At present, I can speak five languages: Russian, Basic Mandarin, Filipino, and English. I had learned it for having a sharp listening skill.

@Shavkat Most Americans can speak only English and not all can speak it fluently, even if born here. We are behind the world in that respect.

I tried to learn a language once but it was difficult for me and in the english language a lot of the words sound the same but have different meanings and spellings so it is really difficult to learn for some.

I had experienced this when learning the Russian language. The construction of sentences is like in the English language. But then, I need to memorize the Russian verbs change in making sentences in terms of the tenses.

@cintol At first, the intonation will affect the speaking part. I do agree on that. But then, if you keep on using and know the differences, then it would easier.

@Shavkat English is a very hard language to use. Those that say they cannot hear you ask questions if not sure what something means or just say I cannot hear you? I learned Hebrew here in Israel and that is also a hard language to learn.

I think learning other languages are challenging. Some people say that it is best to learn a particular language when talking to the locals. For me, I had learned five languages and self-taught. My tool is my sharp listening skill.

I think the grammar rules are quite mind-blowing. Some rules are too puzzling when learning the English language. For instance, if we use the pronoun "I," why we need plural form of 'be verbs.'

I don't speak a language other than English although I have had both Spanish and French in school. Spanish is prevalent here in this area..so if they are speaking slowly enough I can understand some of it.

During the Spanish era in my country, the locals need to learn the language. However, it had changed its education system and removed the Spanish language as the subject in schools. Luckily, the country adapt the English as the second language.

Yes, of course the first thing is to know the alphabets of a language being learned and how it is pronounced. It is a must. It is always difficult to learn a new language. At first. It needs patience, hard work and determination to learn a new language. Yes, I do speak other languages besides English.

It is nice that we can be multilingual if there is a strong will to learn other languages. Pronunciation is also a must. It will not be comprehensible if not said the words accurately.
