A Miracle on Our Street

This morning I went on a walk with my missus and as we returned to the house we noticed an Air Force Master Sergeant parked in front of our house holding a little girl who appeared to be about two-years-old. As we approached, the MSG greeted us and asked us if we knew who the little girl was. We had to reply that we did not. The MSG then explained he was on his way to work when he spotted her in the middle of the street in front of our house. She was standing there all alone. He stopped and got her out of the street and called 911. I waited with him for the Sheriff to arrive. As others of our neighbors who also walk in the morning passed by we stopped them and the MSG explained the predicament in hopes one of them might recognize the little girl. We started trying to think of which of our neighbors had children her age and were planning to start knocking on doors when the Sheriff's Deputies began to arrive. One of the first doors we knocked on did not know where the child belonged but thought she might and, after walking with the MSG and a deputy into the nearby cul-de-dac, discovered an open garage door. On looking into the garage, they discovered the kitchen door open as well. The deputy knocked on the door and after a few minutes, a woman, who had been asleep answered. The little girl did turn out to be her little girl. Evidently, the husband left for work and not only hadn't closed the garage door, he'd forgotten to lock the kitchen door. The little girl woke up, found the open doors, went exploring, and, thank the Lord, was found by the MSG. The little girl had left her house and found her way to the street in front of our house in the forty minutes my wife and I were gone on our walk. It is frightening to think she got so far so fast. Also, our street is somewhat busy in the morning with people leaving for work. I shudder to think what might have happened to the little girl if someone paying less attention than the Master Sergeant had driven down the road first. Instead of a happy ending, we might have had a tragedy. If it were up to me, I'd give the MSG a medal. I also want to give kudos to our Sheriff's Department. Once word that a little girl had been found alone in the middle of the street, they showed up in force to help find her home. With all of the volunteers who'd showed up, we could have quickly canvased the neighborhood by going door-to-door. I'm so relieved our story had a happy ending. How is your day so far? PS: It started raining as soon as the little girl was returned to her mother. PPS: Appropriate music. Sometimes Angels wear Air Force uniforms.

That is great news and glad she is now home safe. I bet the husband had words when he got home from work though...It could've turned out much worse and glad it did not. She is one lucky little girl.

I would not want to be that husband when he gets home tonight. The Master Sergeant truly earned his wings (angels wings) today.

I am really glad it ended that way. I won't like to be in that husband's shoes when he faces his wife later.

I wonder if she called him to let him know or if she'll wait until he gets home to let him have it.

@DWDavis Best not to warn him before - he might stay out the night. Anyway - we are human and mistakes can be made. Let us hope he is really a nice, caring father and husband and instead of a quarrel there will be hugs and thanksgiving that the child was rescued.

I agree with you, the young man should receive a medal. I hope the little girls father will be more careful from now on.

At least both are more aware of things that could go wrong @DWDavis

I'm sure he will, and I imagine both parents have many sleepless nights ahead listening for any sound from their little girls room.

Yes, we were. The deputies were ready to have us start a door-to-door canvas of the neighborhood if that house had not turned out to be her home.

I hate to think what would have happened if a distracted driver had been heading down the road instead of the MSG. And stern is probably an understatement for what the husband is in for.

@DWDavis Exactly. I'm glad it was early and there weren't too many drivers out on the road. I can only imagine how relieved the mother was. I bet she has both her husband and the toddler on a short leash for a long time.

Thank Goodness that man arrived when he did. One time when my son was little..he walked out of the apartment while I was taking a shower and couldn't get back in. He was pounding on the door. When I came out..he was standing there with a policeman. I was embarassed..but I had no clue he had gotten out. Those things do happen.

It's always great when things end with a happy ending. Good work everyone and especially the MSG who was alert.

I am still getting knots in my stomach when I think about what could have happened. The Lord sent that little girl an angel in an AF uniform.
