Today in History

Today's historic events took place in our near past. You don't need to look further than 1965. Were you around at that time? 1965 was the year of the Watts Riots in South Central Los Angeles. Even I have a bit of a memory for that one. At least I remember the flames and rioting that lasted several days. Six to be exact. More than 3000 people were arrested, over 1000 injured, and 34 people died before it was over. 1973 is a date even DB, Four Walls, and a couple other members here might remember, or at least know about. It was the date Hip-Hop was born. DJ Kool Herc, Clive Campbell, threw a party in his home in South Bronx, New York, and with two manually operated turn-tables birthed a new sound in music - Hip-Hop. 1973 was also the year for a famous movie starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Mackenzie Phillips, and Cindy Williams. If memory serves, I think John Travolta was also in this movie. Written and directed by George Lucas, moviegoers were entertained by that now classic, American Graffiti. Believe it or not, I have yet to see this classic. All of you are old enough but might not be aware of this holiday, unless you live in Japan. Hiking groups wanted a holiday celebrating the country's terrain and geography. What better way to do that when their Kanji character and the number for today look like a perfect reason to celebrate. Thus Mountain Day was born in 2016. It is a national holiday in Japan. You don't need a reason to get out in nature, but Mountain Day does give you a good excuse. No mountains near you, find a good forest to walk through and let your thoughts and the anxieties of the day wash away. Sounds good to me. There you have some important events in history. Is there anything special about today happening in your life? Thanks for reading.

I haven't seen "American Graffiti" either. Such a pity about the riots, and it seems that man never learns from history.

Man just does the same wrong things over and over.

@jstory07 , from what we see on the news nowadays, that is true.

@bluesa True, that's why we see history repeated so much.

I do not remember the riots of 1965 in Los Angeles. I think that back in those times we did not know a lot in Europe about what happened in the United States. I have not seem American Graffiti either.

You're not old, you're well-seasoned. At least that's what I found out from another myLotter on here.

John Travolta was not in American Graffiti. You may be thinking of Harrison Ford.

Then maybe it was Saturday Night Fever or something like that I was thinking about. I didn't know Harrison Ford was in American Graffiti.

@just4him Always. Besides English, history was always a favorite subject of mine. I LOVE it.
