Looking at some of the comments I’m beginning to think I should take this series of discussions to a confessional. I’m looking at ten legendary classics that it seems everyone in the world has seen, yet I avoided somehow. Here’s today’s classic. #2: Psycho This movie inspired a great song (“Psycho,” famously covered by Elvis Costello for the Almost Blue sessions). This is considered one of THE great horror movies of all time. And I’ve never seen it. But I can tell you that the “blood” in the shower scene was chocolate syrup. Given that the film was in black and white, Hitchcock needed something that would show up well. Oh, it showed up well, all right. As to why I’ve never seen this, I guess you can blame The Birds. I was way too young to see that (and I saw the “edited for television” version), and it scared the bird droppings out of me. Now, North By Northwest is a little more my taste (we watched that in American Cinema class), not to mention Cary Grant was better looking than Tony Perkins. Hitchcock was a master of suspense, which is probably what kept me away from this film. Psycho Directed by Alfred Hitchcock Released in 1960 Here’s the great song “Psycho” (which I’ve featured before in countdowns):
From '' Sweet Dreams '' Label: F-Beat -- XX 19 Format: Vinyl, 7", Single Country: UK Released: 1981 Tracklist A Sweet Dreams Producer - Billy Sherrill, Writt...

In the beginning, Psycho bothered me and I could not shower alone in the house but this was many moons ago. Now whenever I want to get my nerve ending tingling I watch Psycho.

Exorcist did that to me. But there was a reason for that. I was reading exorcist late in the evening...and there is this passage of door opening creaking sound ...and right then, my landlord's son opened my window, which was not fully closed, to ask me for a screwdriver since he had to repair his motorcycle. You can imagine the sound coinciding...never could go further with the book and of course, I did not watch the movie.

I saw the remake of it with Vince Vaughn (I think that's who was in it) and I didn't get it.

The remake was a shot for shot duplicate and the dumbest remake ever made. Norman Bates is a creepy guy with mother issues and acts out in murderous impulses.

Oh I saw that one. I keep wondering why psychos kill, what is the pleasure of killing...it is so dumb.

To us yes it's dumb. To them, it is as normal as eating breakfast, because in their minds there's nothing wrong with it...

I watched it in a dark room with my friend when I was 15, and it scared the living hell out of me! But it is a cinematic masterpiece alright. The main thing isn't the horrific aspect of it much but the goosebump-arising suspense and the way the villain is portrayed...

I saw the birds and that was bad enough. I skipped Psycho too.
