Did You Cry on Your First Day?

In America, kindergarten is the first grade. Not first grade. It's the Big K that gives you your start in the real world without mommy and daddy.
How many of you can remember your first day in school?
Did you cry?
Even though it's been decades, I still remember the day I started school.
I remember my mom telling me “It's time for you to go school. Now don't cry.”
I was trying to hold back the tears.
Now why did she have to go and say that to me?
I CRIED!!!

Oh yes, I did.
Well... I can't remember about Nursery & Kindergarten, but on the first day of grade 1...
Maybe it's because I knew my sister was supposed to be in the same school. So... I can't remember if it was the first period or the second... but at one point, I just got up and left the classroom, and proceeded to walk all over school looking for my sister. I got lost going up one staircase and going down another... In the end, a teacher found me crying walking here and there and brought me back to my classroom... in time for recess.

@moirai thankfully the teacher found you. When we are little, school could look daunting.

@cmoneyspinner Are your siblings older or younger?

That was certainly an unforgettable experience. None of my older siblings were at the school I attended.

Some kids are brave. Some are even happy for the new experience. It's exciting!

@LadyDuck - Oh! You weren't happy? To think of it, I wasn't unhappy being at school but it felt overwhelming not having my mom there. Most of the kids treated me nice from the very first day, so it wasn't a bad experience at all. I still cried though.

Oh that was a long time ago, I do not know how I was when I get to school the first day. I do remember seating in a classroom clueless about what is about to happen there. When the teacher started talking I didn't get anything what she said then after sometime we were dismissed and my older sister was there to fetch me. Then the rest is history.

@cmoneyspinner True though were not in good terms during our younger years, she literally took care of me during my younger years till I finished my secondary school. Now we are in good terms as adults. We have outgrown our differences during our childhood days.

@rsa101 - My late sister took care of me too. We had a good relationship from childhood into adulthood. She even helped me out with my school work.

It helps if you have an older sibling.

I don't remember that far back, but I know I didn't cry. I would have been excited and ready to play with all the toys

@cmoneyspinner I vaguely remember nap time and asking the teacher "You call that a nap?" We literally laid on our mats for 1 whole minute. She didn't understand. Trying to choose which crayon to eat next is very exhausting work

I don't remember toys. But I do remember we were forced to take naps and I could never get to sleep.

Older siblings or friends help remove the anxiety. But if you feel all alone, it can be a little bit overwhelming.

@cmoneyspinner Certainly it can but nowadays children do seem to be a bit more prepared for their first day at school.

I don't remember any of my kids crying. If they did, they didn't do it in front of me and the teachers never told me about it.

I'm kind if glad that my mom knew the lady who owned the school. It was a private school but my mom worked a deal with the school principal/owner so that I could attend. She didn't want me to go to a public school.

I do not recall. May be I might have been nervous but may be not cried. I will have to ask my father as to what exactly happened then!

@cmoneyspinner [I don't know what that link was - I didn't put that in!]
I went to a once a week class at the park - that was my "preschool". My kids didn't go either, but they did take a bunch of classes where I was there with them. I taught them a lot of academics and such at home too . . . so they were quite ready for school when it was time.

I think pre-school is a good idea. But a lot of kids don't go. I never sent my kids to pre-school. My husband wanted to handle that. At the time, I worked outside the home. He stayed at home, took care of the kids, and attended college classes at night.

I was determine not to cry. Mother came with her friend and rang the parlour bell. The nun asked her if I was the last one and to which she nodded least knowing exactly after nine months my brother came on the scene.
My elder sister who was in the same school came to fetch me. The first thing I did was to rush to my father and tell him I never cried and that every one else did. (lol)

That's a funny story. Did daddy give you a reward? A big hug, a smile, a compliment about being a big girl. All rewards in my book. If my dad did any of those things I was in heaven!

My dad brought me to school and when he was leaving I threw up and the kindergarten teacher called my dad back and said I was not ready for school yet. I went a week later when my parents had calmed me down.

Oh my! I can just see the teacher's face. Teacher's like: 'I have enough experience to know ... this kid is not ready!' It's good the teacher caught your dad before he left.
