We breed ‘em tough in Australia - and a meteor drops in

As you can see by the first item on the menu in the photo, it seems fried mice are on offer at this restaurant. I can’t even remember where I took this photo but it must have been a bit classy to have such gourmet ingredients on offer as their side dishes. I guess they were saving money and clearing out the vermin at the same time. But don’t worry. I’m sure it was just a misprint.
In other interesting news from Western Australia, a meteor of some size was seen over Perth last night. Sonic booms were heard and felt, and doors and windows rattled further to the north. Because of the number of cameras which captured images of the trail, scientists will be able to gauge its position, speed, size and if any of it landed. Only 2 to 3% of visible meteors ever make it to the ground. So there is high excitement in astronomy circles at the moment.

The excitement in Southern California last night was a a 4.4 immediately followed by a 3.4 earthquakes. I felt them sitting down. Just a tremor of movement. Not as thrilling as a meteor.

Yes, it is. There was a massive one dropped in the Flinders Ranges area but millions of years ago and apparently its impact was felt all over the world.

Kind of restaurants that I would not forget, to be sure to not come back
. During the siege of Paris of 1870-1871, after the population had eaten all the horses and animals in the zoo, rats became a delicacy in restaurants, and you can read several recipes of rats invented by the chefs at this time.
A very small meteorite can do a sonic boom and may be difficult to locate, but they have good chances with several cameras.

That is so awesome that a meteor was seen in your area! I have always been fascinated by all things outer space, so I would have been really excited if I lived in Perth and got to witness such an event!

@JudyEv I wonder if the phenomenon was seen in other countries, or if the conditions of your location in Australian were the only place where everything line up perfectly to give you the spectacular view?

@moffittjc Here is a link I found saying two were seen in Indonesia, Canada and China. Sun dogs as they are called seem to be something different with a 'big' sun and smaller one. The ones we saw and ones here are both the same size.
This y our reality is a lie. Two suns have been reported being seen in not only one country but three: Indonesia, China, and Canada. I covered the story on t...

I wonder what mice was a typo for? That is funny.
Oh wow, that's a huge meteor! I wonder if they will find bits of it.

@FayeHazel I read there is a $1,000 fine here if you remove one from where it lands.

I am sure even if it is not a misprint, I would not even dream of wanting that, and probably would be afraid to eat anything there at that restaurant. Ewe!!!

I can't imagine any Australian eating mice. We're not into such things. No dogs or horses either - thank goodness.

That must have been exciting to see and hear. BTW, what is haloumi?

Haloumi is a type of cheese. Wikipedia says it is 'a semi-hard, unripened, brined cheese made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, and sometimes also cow's milk. It has a high melting point and so can easily be fried or grilled.' I'm glad you asked because I didn't know either.

I'm hopeful that is just a misprint. I have eaten many unusual foods, but never mice. I'm sure it tastes like chicken.
Our older son took an astronomy class as an undergrad. One of his professors was Carl Sagan who turned him on to astronomy. He texted me about that meteor. Could be very exciting for those who care.

If this is the kids' menu that would explain it - they'll eat anything and be excited about it.

True and they'd gain a lot of status with their friends, wouldn't they?

@porwest @allknowing Just in case you hadn't worked it out, I'm sure it's meant to be 'fried rice'. But if it's real, I wonder if they cut their tails off?

Might be just a typographical error there. I am interested in the meteor that crashed. I thought you took pictures of it. I hope no one was hurt when it landed somewhere. It mus be a large one since it created a sonic boom and has shaken some houses around the area.

Well that is interesting. It seems like the large meteors tend to fall out west here. The restaurant must have been freaking with fried mice on the menu.

Maybe it was around Halloween when the mice were on offer.

It does seem many don't proof their print these days, doesn't it?

And half the time even if they proof their print, they still don't bother to get anyone to check their spelling.
