Anne's September Show and Tell

As many of you know, my wife, Anne, taught Air Force dependent children in Turkey for about nine years in the 1970s and then in Germany for eleven years. She has always been fascinated with fabric. While she was in Turkey she collected a number of hand-woven rugs called Kilims and some other hand made textiles as well. Kilims are varying in size, from nine to thirteen feet. Most are woven on small portable looms by nomads, then fitted together with a seam down the middle. Sewn together, they are five to six feet wide. Last week, in a local shop called ETC (Eugene Textile Center), we hung a show of many of her kilims , prayer rugs, donkey bags and some large goat hair bags used to store wheat, cotton or bedding. All the items are at least 50 to 100 years old and look great where we hung them. Anne will give a talk about some of the dyes, weaves and methods used in mid-September. A few of the items will be for sale.

Anne certainly knows her fabrics. That is amazing! Best of luck to her. When we were in Turkey, we visited factories and watched as the Turkish carpets and Kilims were hand made. Very labor intensive and beautiful!

Yes, I'm sure it was. Some of these were made in tents.

Goodness, how interesting would that be? I'd love to be there. I saw a photo the other day of a 'harness' on a donkey. It was really a saddle-bag with four pouches on each side. When the flocks of sheep and goats are taken up into the mountains, any little kids or lambs that get tired are popped into the pouches for a ride.

It will be a lovely exhibition I am sure. Thirteen feet would be quite large.
