Have you heard the Ogden Nash rhyme about lamas and llamas? I guess it’s okay to reproduce it here: The one-l lama, he's a priest The two-l llama, he's a beast I will bet a silk pajama There isn't any three-l lllama I saw two llamas recently at the Perth Royal Show in Western Australia. There was also a small group of alpacas but I’ll write about them later. Their classes had been held earlier in the week but a dozen or so were still yarded in the same pavilion as the goats. Llamas are most commonly found in the Andes region of South America. They are used for carrying small loads during long walks. Their wool is also made into garments, their meat can be eaten and their hides made into leather. Both llamas and alpacas are sometimes used as guard animals for sheep or goats. Llamas and alpacas are often grouped together but they do have some differences. Llamas have long, banana-shaped ears while alpaca ears are short and pointed. At the other end of the animal, llamas have a high-set tail while the tail of the alpaca is set low. Llamas are also taller, standing around 175cm (5 feet 7 inches) tall.

Me and my family saw some llamas before on a school field trip, they are gorgeous animals but we were warned not to go too near since they love to spit when irritated.

The trick is not to irritate them!

@JudyEv correct and that is done first by not going too near especially if you are not the handler/ caretaker

@louievill These showed no signs of spitting and there were people going back and forth past them all day. I guess they were used to it.

@JudyEv that is so great but the owner would have to take very great care of them.

The name 2-Llama made me think of Dr Doolittle's Pushmepullyou which is basically a two headed llama

Do they kick as hard as kangaroos also? I know alpacas are safe animals. They don't attack.

@Mavic123456 I've only heard that it's green (from the grass I guess) and very smelly. And they can spit quite a long way.

They might kick but both alpacas and llamas (and camels) spit if they get upset.

They are interesting animals. We don't see many here but alpacas are pretty common.

What is the difference between the 2-l and the 1-l lamas? (physically) I used to wish to have one as a pet (the 2-l or the 1-l, I have no clue), just that they look so soulful somehow...

A lama is a priest so you wouldn't want one of those as a pet. Well, I guess not anyway.

@YrNemo That's what the rhyme says and it's correct. Lama is a Tibetan priest or teacher. The term is often given to 'venerated spiritual masters' says Wiki as in 'Dalai Lama'.

I think of them as camels or donkey's with fur. I saw an Alpaca or two earlier this summer when at a festival. They are pretty animals.

They look to have delicate legs to me and alpacas always look like they have their pyjamas on.

@JudyEv Some will, at least this one did. But she was on her hands and knees at the time. He had never attacked anyone before that even kids.

@wolfgirl569 Really? So they will go for humans too? I know the Maremma dogs will. In the French Alps there were signs warning not to approach the dogs or their flocks.

The neighbor across the road from my mailbox has llamas- or maybe alpacas. I can't tell. One looks like the one in your photo.

It's hard to get far enough away sometimes to get a good snap - being in a pen doesn't help either.

I am always intrigued by new animals that I don't see often. Llamas are quite rare here. I have a book about someone in Wales who had one. It was very interesting. It used to join them in the lounge sometimes in the evening. That might be going a bit far for me but the book was a good read.
