Emu chicks in camouflage outfits

One of the exhibits in the All Creatures Great and Small pavilion at the Perth Royal Show in Western Australia featured emu chicks. There were two pens with perhaps eight in each. They had an infra red lamp in case they needed some extra warmth at night. My nephew and I would be bedding his goats down around 8pm and we’d hear them cheeping to each other. In front of the pens was a stall selling a variety of products made from emu oil including some pain relief ointment and hand cream. I sampled the cream then bought some. There was also a basket full of bright green eggs which were selling for $15 each. The chicks were beautifully striped and would be well camouflaged in the bush

They are pretty little chicks. They are more ordinary once they're adult.

@Courage7 They can't fly. Can you see the vestige of a wing hanging down just in front of the leg?

Are those bright green eggs by the Emus? The soap I am using for the past months has Emu oil. I am happy that it makes my skin soft and well moisturized.

Yes, they are emu eggs. If the bird has been feeding on dry grass the eggs wouldn't be quite so bright but a browner colour.

I can't tell the emu from the ostrich. It surprises me that emu oil actually has healing properties.

@JudyEv Thank you for the collage by which I get an idea of how they are different from each other! I know the Tiger Balm, but not the Goanna Oil .

They are quite different really. I've done a collage of an emu and an ostrich. People say the emu oil helps. There is Tiger Balm and Goanna Oil which are supposed to relieve pain so I guess emu oil could too. Photo of ostrich courtesy Wikimedia Commons Susann Eurich.

@Inlemay Getting sinus problems would put me off too. Luckily the hay and feed doesn't affect me.

I agree, they would be well camouflaged. Is the lotion scented?

Reminds me of our State Fair. I have always been partial to Emus.

I should think our agricultural shows would be quite similar to your State Fairs.

The colour of the shell depends a bit on their feed. Out in the desert where there is very little green feed the eggs would be a much browner colour.

Those young emu are cute. The baby ostriches are not striped, but they also have a colour that allows them to well camouflage in the bushes.

@JudyEv I think it's very possible, animals seem better naturally equipped than humans.

The camouflage works very well. I read that the spots on baby deer are for the same purpose.

They are cute. That is a lot for an egg to me. But I think they sell them even higher here at least for fertilized ones.

These were blown as were just a novelty. We had a pet emu and would blow her eggs and make sponge cakes in a baking dish.

@judyev what bits of the emu are used to make oil and cream?

They use the fat as far as I know so the poor old emu gives up his life so I can have hand-cream.

Most small birds are well camouflaged when they are tiny. The killdeer are entertaining to watch. They run around and you see them all over the place....then mama lets out a warning screech and they all duck down and hover in place....you have no idea where they went.
