Mail Order Eye Glasses

In six years, the cost of what was basically the same pair of glasses at my local opticians shop went from $200 to $400 to over $800. The lenses were the same, just a small change in prescription. The frames were the same style and brand. The only thing that changed significantly was the price. I found articles online that explained the price hike was due to an Italian frame manufacturer having a near monopoly on the glasses frame market and engaging in predatory practices to drive anyone who tried to undercut their price out of business. The US can do little about this company as it is in Italy, and the Italian government won't do anything as they are even more notoriously corrupt than the US government. So, I decided to order glasses online. They were 1/4 the price of the glasses at my opticians, for two pairs. Let me just say that the old adage "You get what you pay for" rang true in this case. These are the worst glasses I have ever had. My distance vision is fine. My near vision is fine. But the in between just isn't there. There is no progression from far to near. It just suddenly changes. I have put up with them for six months now. In six months, my insurance will help me pay for a new pair. I've already contacted a different optometrist and optician shop owned by the family of one of last year's students. They've assured me they can provide me a decent pair of glasses I will like at a fair price. If you wear glasses, have you always been happy with the glasses you bought?

I ordered my last glasses, of which I need three pairs when I order, online, and I'm satisfied with them and have had them for two years now. I do need to go to the optician for another exam, but I will leave the $800 pair of glasses in the store. I got all three pairs plus the exam for under $100. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your online glasses.

If you only need a pair of straight up, nothing extra glasses is might work, but if you need bifocals or anything else special, I recommend you shop around at the brick and mortar optician shops in your area.

I used to go to a high street optician until I broke my glasses twice in three months...both times they couldn't be fixed to the first time I bought new frames and they put the lenses from my old ones into the new frame. Second time the frames had been discontinued so I would have had to buy new frames and lenses and at a few hundred pounds a tie it was getting too expensive. I ordered 2 pairs online for £30!!!!!...thought they'd be rubbish as the price was so low but I am massively pleased with what I got

I'm glad you had a good experience with your online glasses. I had high hopes for these, but perhaps my vision needs are too complicated for online ordering.

I have a friend who ordered his glasses online and had a good experience. I wonder if yours were just bad pairs, or if It was a different company. Hope yocan hold out till you order the new pair.

It may be sooner rather than later that I get a new pair. The nose piece of one of these pairs broke off yesterday.

I am so tempted to order those online. I have had good luck with most purchases online. I check them out as much as possible and always read their return policy. It is a ripoff what the eye doctors charge for glasses.

This company had good reviews and has been around for a while. I think it probably has more to do with my vision than their quality. Still, I think I need to stick with someone local next time.

200 to 800 in six years is definitely steep. are you not allowed to return the extra pair?

I waited too long, I'm afraid, as I kept hoping I would adjust to the new lenses.

I got a new pair about a week ago but they are just the tiniest bit tight. After wearing them for a while my head starts to hurt where the ear-piece goes. I'll take them back one day soon and get them adjusted.

I've had that happen often with a new pair. It feels right at first but over time, ouch.

It is a conundrum indeed. We need the glasses. I wish my eyes would cooperate with contact lenses but they won't/
