BUGFEST: My Pizza with Mealworms and Crickets!

Ireland
November 1, 2018 5:25pm CST
For this evening’s meal I started out with a plain margherita pizza (base, tomato sauce and mozzarella). In the freezer I found a forgotten bag of mealworms and crickets, left over from an earlier episode of entomophagy (that’s the fancy term for insect-eating!). Read on Mealworms are the larval form of a kind of beetle, and have been eaten for centuries in parts of Asia. They are an ecologically sound source of protein, as they use just a tiny amount of water and space, and reproduce prolifically. Crickets are not quite as easy to eat as mealworms, as they have some sharp parts such as their legs, but their soft bodies are very tasty! Mealworms and crickets are easily available in pet shops, as live food for reptiles. The recommended humane way of dealing with them is to put them in the deep freeze. Within a short time they fall asleep, and they die in their sleep once the temperature drops much below freezing. It is then recommended to roast them in a hot oven for a short time, to ensure any parasites they might have are neutralised. During their time in the oven, the mealworms give off a delicious nutty aroma. That pizza was quite filling, so much so that I had to leave one slice for a pre-bed snack. I urge you to try eating insects if the opportunity arises. Otherwise you'll never know what a treat you're missing

I'm glad to hear that, Arthur. If there's a pet shop near you the chance is there

@NormanDarlo I've eaten bardi grubs in a restaurant and was amused when they were served sticking out of an apple.

@JudyEv I looked up bardi grubs and they look nice and fleshy! Do they infest apples?

I'd have thought if anyone was going to single out either the mealworms or the crickets, it's the former they would have said no way about! Crickets and locusts are mentioned specifically in the Bible as being clean (i.e good to eat, in contrast to any other insects).

I had a pizza Margherita (t's from the name of the Queen of Italy) for lunch, the basil on top was missing, so the three colors of the Italian flag were not there, it was not a real Margherita. I am not ready to eat insects.

@NormanDarlo I have been a picky eater since I was a kid. If I see something that I dislike, I cannot continue to eat even if I see others eating. My father was the same, at least I like a lot more food than he did.

@NormanDarlo I knew you would say that. I will just have to take your word for it. Unless one day maybe I can be on the tv show with Bear Grylls and then I might be forced to eat bugs.
Bear Grylls has travelled all five continents filming dynamic, awe-inspiring adventures which have been enjoyed by excitement-hungry audiences around the globe. One episode alone of the Running Wild s
