How do you figure out what to make for dinner?

I need to go to the store to stuck up on groceries so I can make dinner for tonight and for the beginning of the week, along with other things to eat during the day. I have no idea what to make and what I want to eat... I hate when that happens! Makes me not want to go to the store because I don't want to just fill up the fridge just so it's full. I want to get things I can make dinner out of but I have no idea what I want or what I should make. And to not go anywhere or make anything until my husband comes home is not good. He will come home hungry and will want to eat right away, not go shopping and then wait for me to make something... Plus, this will result in a very late dinner, which is not good, though that's when we usually eat. But it's not by choice. It's because he works late and by the time he comes home it's usually after 9 pm or much later than that. How do you figure out what to make for dinner?

My dinners are usually centered around what was on sale at any given time I have gone shopping. I never plan a meal around what I don't have—you generally pay more for everything. When something is on sale, be it meat or whatever, I stock up, and plan my meals around that. Beyond that, using my imagination, combinations of recipes, or modifications of recipes can do the trick. But again, if I don't have it and it wasn't on sale, it won't go on my plate.

I hate it when I stumble upon a recipe that I wanna make but then it calls for ingredients that I don't have or can't get near me... I love getting things on sale... but if I have to take the bus there and back it becomes not worth it and it's even cheaper to just get it nearby at the regular price.

@lovebuglena Yeah. That bugs me too. I just set it aside and wait for that one ingredient or two to go on sale. As for ingredients I can't get, for whatever reason, I try to find a reasonable alternative, but sometimes it's hard to do even that.

Seems like I'm given idea how my wife gets confused what to cook for dinner and thinking I'm hungry already.

I'm more like what's on sale and make dishes out of that. This week however I'm craving for pork ribs and they are very seldom on sale.

I don't eat pork anymore. Used to though. Loved pork chops and bacon! Wonder why pork ribs are rarely on sale...

I use my cookbooks and favorite cooking blogs to get ideas for things that I want to make during the week. Then I make my shopping list. I pick out a few meals that I want to make during the week based on things that seem appealing to me at that time.

@lovebuglena Look through some cooking blogs then. Smitten Kitchen is a good one. I like Skinnytaste too. There are a zillion of them out there.

I usually schedule what to cook for dinner, and I won't bother to find out what to cook for dinner
