Does it bother you when people dont "get" your sense of humor?

My young neighbor friend called me yesterday evening and asked if I could help him use his six spelling words for this week to create four sentences. I've been his "academic mentor" for seven years now, and he knows how seriously I take learning.
I was feeling flip, and told him something like, "Eh, homework is silly. Tell your teacher to take a flying leap at the moon, and let's go cycling." He laughed and said, "No, homework comes first." I knew he would say that, and he knew that I knew he would say that.
We had a good time, and he made up four sentences using his spelling words. We were laughing about how silly a couple of his sentences were, so I decided to do a Facebook post about it. I assumed that my Facebook friends would know that I was "joking around," but some totally missed the "irony" in my post.
One serious discussion about whether 4th graders should have homework emerged. Someone I haven't spoken with live in more that 20 years (Cyrus Clarke, former guitarist with the Cache Valley Drifters) said, with a "straight face," that children should be taught to respect their elders.
Those who know me best "laughed," and left cryptic comments that showed that they understood "where I was coming from." Thank goodness.
Do you get frustrated when you say something funny or ironic, and people don't "get" it?

Nah. As long as I get it I'm okay. Some have called my sense of humor "sick and twisted".

Here's the text of my YouTube post:
Do you think I was right in instructing my young friend to tell his teacher to "take a flying leap at the moon"? He called me a few minutes ago, asking for help on his homework. He is 10 and has to integrate four new spelling words into sentences. Like me, he prefers math to writing. I told him to tell his teacher that "homework was silly" and that he should also tell his teacher to "take a flying leap at the moon" and go cycling with me. I have to teach Intro to Psychology at 6:30 PM, and would like to get some exercise. He would not have it and said homework comes first. I am a developmental psychologist and feel I have some authority in this area. Do you think my advice was wrong?
Duh.

Well sometimes. It depends on how they asked about it

I hate it when I have to explain a joke to someone who just fails to understand it - total buzzkill

@TheHorse If people do not understand may be we missed to be funny and our sarcasm was only understood my ourselves. We have a friend who want to show his sense of humor all the time, even when it's not at all appropriate. Fainting not to understand is a way to make him think about the opportunity to want to be funny when it's not the moment.

@LadyDuck I have a friend like that too. Just turning away and not laughing SHOULD let them know that attempted humor was not appropriate at that moment. But some (like the person I'm thinking of) struggle with reading social cues.

Most of the people I share my sense of humor with are my closest friends and acquaintances so they already know how goofy I am.
When somebody doesn't 'get it', depending on the circumstances, I use that to fuel more humor. I only do this when I know there is little to no chance of something backfiring.
By the time they finally 'get it', it's even funnier than when the whole thing started.
I have had this kind of thing happen to me numerous times so I know how it works.

@TheHorse Yes, that's where paying closer attention to circumstances so things hopefully don't go wrong comes into play.
I don't make this a practice online. I can usually read a person much better when I'm in the same room with them.

@betlynfrnds Yes, there are nonverbal and other cues that let the person know you're not being serious. Here, with people who know me well, I don't need emojis or LOLs. Others might get the wrong idea about me if they don't know that there are certain people I have "teasing contests" with.

I think that some people don't have a sense of humor at all. Boring individuals that are only into themselves. I have been dubbed a "B" before because I have a somewhat dry sense of humor. Oh, well. To each his own amusement I guess.
Children should be taught to respect everyone.

I do not know just used to be not getting my sense of humor why I have to say I make bad jokes and come on that was funny. It does not bug me, just the way it is.

I've noticed that here (my friends on Facebook are used to me by now), so if it's particularly sarcastic here I'll tag it with that Foghorn Leghorn line, "it's a joke, son!"

A lot of people do not understand my odd sense of humor with lines like "Do not get mad." Or "You do not have patience with me."
