Attracting crowds

I bought a different kind of seed for my feeders today. I have had all kinds of birds, some of which I cannot identify, yet. I never get pictures. It is also possible to watch red tailed hawks across the street in the fields. I think one caught something kind of heavy. It seemed to have a hard time gaining any elevation. There are also Flickers--they are red headed, like wood peckers, but have a yellowish breast. The flickers go up and down my cedar tree, but also I have seen them across the road on an elm tree. So everything from wrens and chickadees to cardinals, robins and hawks have been here to feast. The new seed blend has safflower seed kernals, dried berries, oil sunflower seeds and many other things that are yummy to birds. It also attracts them because I have water in the birdbath. Everyone needs a drink now and then.

it should be fun to see different kinds of birds feeding on the seeds.

I learn a lot even as I sit here. I have learned that chickadees seldom perch but mostly hang on the sides of things and grab a bite and then leave.

It is nice to have so many birds to enjoy. It seems the cooler it gets here, the less we see.

Some stay year round here, and some migrate. The weather is still decent on most days.

I have to buy some suet balls, birds need a little fat during the winter.

Yes, I put fats out, but so far not in suet balls. As the weather worsens it will be a step I will take, or I will save some fats from our meals for them.

@GardenGerty I put out the suet balls yesterday and I have seen that the birds immediately came to eat.

@GardenGerty I am thinking about moving mine next spring so I can look out the back window. I will see the goats, horses, chickens, cats and wild birds then.

I love seeing the flickers. Most of my photos are from behind the patio door. I keep the bird bath fresh, had to get the ice out this morning. But it is worth it. I put whole peanuts out for bluejays.

How do you keep the water in the bath from freezing?

I do not. I have to take out fresh. It is not that consistently cold so far. I know that there are heaters for birdbaths. If the surface is frequently disturbed it is better.

I love keeping a lookout for birds. I hope that I can catch one on camera but they never stick around for long.

The view is so lively when I see them. I just heard a cardinal calling as well.

It gives me a reason to rest my eyes and look away from the computer screen.

@GardenGerty I can understand that. I'm always looking outside, though right now the sight isn't very nice, the snow is almost melted. However, we have a system coming in today that will make me happy.

Birds can be so hard to photograph but with the bird bath sometimes they stay long enough for me to get a quick shot.

I have had pet birds and have held them or had them perch on my fingers, but they also can bite hard.
