A new film for Western Australia - Rams

A new film is being shot in Western Australia’s Great Southern region starring Michael Caton and Sam Neill. I’m not sure how well-known these actors are although I’m sure many of you have heard of New Zealand’s Sam Neill. The film is called Rams and is a ‘fresh interpretation’ of the Icelandic film Hrútar which won an award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The film tells the tale of two estranged brothers who live on neighbouring sheep farms and have to work together to save their livelihood and that of their community after a rare disease threatens their flocks. However the real star of the film threatens to be a Dorset Horn ram named Locke. Time restrictions meant that Locke had to be brought in from the eastern states as no local trained rams could be found. Bringing animals into West Australia from the east is not an easy task and Locke had to be washed and scrubbed before being allowed entry. If the authorities had found one grass seed in his coat he would not have been allowed in. Locke is used to fake smoke and wind machines, and has worked under bright lights. He will walk to a spot and stand there and knows the command ‘stay’. It’s one film I’ll be looking forward to seeing. The photo shows a Dorset Horn ram which was exhibited at the Perth Royal Show in September. In the film, the ram has had his horns cut as they were about to grow into the sides of his face.

Those horns look uncomfortable, bet he was glad to see them go. That movie and Locke sound great!

It's always a bit of a thrill when a film is made in our state.

How can that ram in the photo even see? The horns are covering his eyes! How could they survive in the wild like that?

@JudyEv Do their horns ever break off in the wild? Like when they are butting heads with other rams? I know that deer will often lose their antlers when they are tangling with other bucks.

@JudyEv I certainly wouldn't want to be head-butted by one of those rams, that's for sure.

@moffittjc Some breeds with less substantial horns sometimes get them broken off but I can't imagine these breaking.

I am sure these animals enjoy what they do. Atleast so sit seems. Babe Pig in the City was one such film packed with animals. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

The same person who trained Locke trained the animals in Babe II as well.

I have heard that the law about seeds and plants is very strict in your country, I can understand, nobody want invasive dangerous species. Those horns look beautiful, but surely not comfortable.

@JudyEv I think it's a good policy. Look what happened in the past to local species when the people from other countries brought their animals. Many local species disappeared.

@LadyDuck That's true and often the local species were best adapted to the conditions of the area.

We have very strict laws indeed. A New Zealand goat-breeder might buy some of my nephew's goats. They would be allowed into NZ but goats from the other Australian states would not be - at least not without a lot of paperwork and quarantine.

Is that a male ram?

A male sheep is a ram and a female a ewe. And yes, that's a ram. The horns of the ewes are not so huge.

This ram has strange horns that all but block it view.I think it was a hassle letting the Locke do as the director said.

The ram in the photo isn't Locke. I'll put the link to one of the articles about the film and you'll find a photo of Locke there. You can see how his horns have been cut off.
The 'leading man' of an upcoming film might actually be a leading ram, an impressive and gentle Dorset horn ram named Locke.

Amazing animals and those horns must be heavy. It looks like that poor ram's eyes are covered by the horns. How does he see anything?

I guess he must be able to see or he would have never survived. You do have to wonder though don't you?

No, it's definitely Michael Caton. I doubt he is known anywhere other than Australia. And if you get to watch it one day, the area is where we have driven through many times.
