Brrr! It is Cold in Southern California

I grew up in Missouri, a state which regularly gets snow and ice. Now I live in Southern California, near the ocean, where we almost never get freezing weather. I have become such a weather wimp! Anytime the morning temperature falls below 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 degrees Celsius, I feel as if it is freezing outside. Our family knows a young woman named Bev who moved from the US to Costa Rica about 10 years ago to teach school. She married a local man and is raising a family in Costa Rica. Bev's parents live in Florida. She posted this funny conversation with her 5 year-old daughter on Facebook this morning: Bev's daughter: Mommy it is so cold today that I think it might snow! Bev: Honey, you know it doesn't snow in Costa Rica! Bev's daughter: But mommy, it is almost as cold as when we visit grandma in Florida! Bev said she wants to take her daughter to see snow sometime when they are visiting the U.S., but she's afraid that being in really cold weather may be quite a shock to her young daughter who thinks Florida is cold!

Cold weather is very bad when people do not have the habit. It's 28 F here this morning, the pond has frozen, the cats love to "slide" on it.

@LadyDuck - Yes, that is much colder than I am accustomed to. I'm happy to stay indoors and warm when it is chilly outside, and I know it is much colder in Switzerland than it is in California!

Haha. I am a weather wimp too. Our weather is very mild really compared to most other places but I whinge about the heat in summer (maybe 40C if we're unlucky) and the cold in winter (maybe a frost occasionally). And mostly I can choose to stay indoors if I want to!

@sallypup - That is not very far at all by Missouri standards. We used to drive around the state all the time!

@sallypup - I lived in St. Louis until I was 11, then in a town about 30 miles south of St. Louis until I was 18, and finally lived in Columbia, in central Missouri, while I was attending the University of Missouri. I spent a lot of time dealing with ice and snow while I was growing up.

@JESSY3236 - Yes, I think the 40's is cold. I do not go horseback riding on weekends when the temperature is below 50.

I love the weather here in Texas. I moved here from Kansas back in March and i hated the cold there. Can't beat 60s in mid December!

@TJGray - We lived in Dallas and raised our children there for 25 years. I agree that the weather is wonderful most of the time. We had some cold weather, and it got hot in mid summer, but most of the time it was very mild.

@TJGray - That is how I felt about growing up in Missouri and later living for 25 years in Texas. The weather in Texas was much better! Now we live in California, and I love the weather here even more, although I actually miss those warm summer evenings in Texas!

@DeborahDiane not near as cold as Kansas that's for sure. I'll take the heat over the cold any day though

@Karenmm - Yes, her daughter is very funny, but I don't think she knew she was being funny, since she has never actually been somewhere that gets really cold!

It probably would be a shock to the young daughter.

@Tampa_girl7 - I think everyone should experience snow at least once in their lifetime ... but that may be enough for most people! LOL

It must be cooler for being closer to the ocean. It's cool but we are "hot" compared to much of the rest of the country.

@JohnRoberts - Yes, we are hot compared to the rest of the country. I occasionally see people swimming in the ocean or playing on the beach when I am dressed in jeans and a warm sweatshirt! Yes, I am definitely a weather wimp! LOL
