Christmas at Carriage Hill Farm

United States

This was a fun visit! We moved near the farm back in 1980, less than one mile away. We visited often and always went to the Christmas on the Farm activity. Now that I'm back in town I went to Christmas at the Farm and really enjoyed it. This working farm is run as it was in 1880 by the Arnold Family. It's very interesting to experience how things were done back then. In 2011 we discovered that my husband is related to the original owners who bought it in 1880. His 5x great grandmother is the sister to the man who bought the farm and is buried there. So now the farm has even more meaning to us than just the almost forty years of regularly visiting and participating in the events. The family is my childrens family, great aunts and uncles, cousins etc. Here is my video of this years visit. Photo and video are mine
Some days you must get out and craft! This is a working 1880s Farm originally purchased by the Arnold family. The Arnold family are my husband and children's...

Yes, it was quite a surprise. My son said he always felt connected but thought it was because we all loved it so much. It was a big surprise to find out they were really family and that is the connection he was feeling. He said now it made sense. We went to a lot of places regularly but he didn't feel that way about any of them except the farm.

I loved the video, it looks like a lot of fun. We have somehomes that do similar things and I always enjoyed them. Haven't gone in a few years so might have to do it this year. Very cool to be related to the owners of the farm.

@Jeanniemaries I hope I never need to do many of these old ways but at least I know how if push comes to shove (what a funny expression!).

@Jeanniemaries so, it was an instinct for you to have feelings that your husband had relatives long before you were born in 1880.

It was certainly a shock to find that out after visiting the farm for so many years. We felt like we knew the family before and then finding out they were part of the family!

@ridingbet Almost a hundred years before this branch of his family moved to the farm, one of my husbands ancestors was rewarded with land after serving in the Reveloutionary War. The land was here in Ohio and he built a house and farmed the land. We discovered it, again through Ancestry dot com. The house is only 18 miles from my sons house today. It still stands and their graves are nearby in a long lost cemetery you can only reach via a small path through a vacant half wooded lot in the middle of nowhere. I wroe an article here about it last year with pictures. So two different branches of his family settled here in our county. The title is DISCOVERING OUR REVELOUTIONARY SOLDIER published last Aug 2017

Every year I post about Christmas in New York City because it is really a magical time (even though I haven't been there in decades) and I have never forgotten it.

I would love to see New York City at Christmas in person! I've been twice and I loved being there, but never at Christmas!

I must remember to mention it to my newest daughter in law, She works for the Metro Parks System. Family details like that often go unmentioned. She probaby would not take time to view the lirttle video at this busy time of year.

Yes, it's a very popular event here in our city. It was a hard way of life back then but they didn't think so.

For many years now! We moved her in 1980 and have gone to this event most of those years. I remember once someone took a photo of my son when he was 10 or so peeking in the window (which was all decorated like my photo) with his hat and gloves on and snowing behind him. It was a cool picture!
