What would you keep in a 'gentleman's surprise chair'?

Deborah K. Mitchell (@Corbin5) recently wrote an interesting post about a ‘gentleman’s surprise chair’. Here is the link: I don’t know why a gentleman should have such a lovely chair with drawers in the arms and a chessboard under the seat although I haven’t quite worked out how you’d play chess while sitting in the chair. Deborah lists six things that the various ‘pockets’ held so I thought I’d give you the six things I’d want in such a nifty chair. Like the gentleman, I’d have an alcoholic beverage and suitable glassware with which to drink it. So that’s #1 and #2. Then I’d have a stash of Lindt chocolates, a puzzle book or three, a pen and perhaps some crochet and the current book I was reading. I’ve lost count now but I’m sure they’d all fit. And, instead of ‘very naughty photos of well-endowed ladies’, maybe I’d have a calendar of male hunks so I knew what day it was. What would you keep in the pockets of such a chair? The photo is of an antique hall-table. It isn't nearly as functional as a 'gentleman's chair'.
Well, I think the 'Gentleman's Surprise Chair' from 1880 was not the most proper chair for a so-called gentleman. Oh sure, the 'Gentleman's Surprise...

I am surrounded by books, notebooks and index cards along with pens. Some pockets would be very handy

My friend is a quilter and she made a sort of saddle with pockets that fits over the arm of her chair and holds her bits and pieces.

It might not be as functional, but that table is gorgeous! I'd keep the latest book I'm reading, a coloring book and colored pencils, the TV and DVD remotes, and a bottle of water. Can't think of anything else to go in the drawers.

@JudyEv They're essential. I use two of them. One for the TV and one for the DVD player.

Good job you remembered the remotes! I hadn't thought to them but then I don't watch much TV.

@Sreekala Fair enough. The table would look nice with a vase of flowers.

That's good idea too but it mightn't fit so well in the drawers in the chair I wrote about.

You have good choices, I would substitute knitting for crochet and coloring books for puzzle books.

My mobile phone he he, then a brandy, plus the sunglasses because I often forget them, and a sexy calendar.

I spent some time over this and just could not find anything that I would place in those pockets for the simple reason it would not be quite convenient specially placing something under the seat How does one get it out?

I suppose it is just stored there so that when you feel like playing you pull it out, sit it on a table and sit down again to play.

All my husband wants is his laptop to play his games on.

Instead of a chess board, I'd stash my laptop in there so that I could pull it out to myLot when I want to. I'd have to have a built-in cup holder and maybe a little holder for a small dish that I could put fruit into without spilling while I sat in my chair. And my phone, I'd need a drawer to stash my phone in. Otherwise I am a pretty transparent person.

I forgot about my laptop. I'd have to make room for that! But no phone for me.

Funny about the calendar. I would surely keep chocolates, not a Chess board, but a Backgammon, my crochet, the book I am reading, a pen and my agenda.

Hmm. I am not sure what I would keep in there. Most of my drawers anywhere just become junk drawers. It's kind of sad really.

Every house needs a junk drawer or three. I go through ours occasionally but rarely throw much out.

It would be nice to have certain things close at hand but out of sight.
