The Oceans of the World Connect Us

It's the second day of January here in New Zealand, a quiet grey looking day after yesterday's brilliant summer sunshine. I'm drinking my first cup of coffee for the day with our young cat Charlie curled up asleep beside me. I enjoyed interacting with so many of you on New Years Eve, showing me the positive side of the world rather than all the horrible things the media like to show us. New Zealand is such a tiny country compared to where many of you live and tucked away at the bottom of the world. I like to think this photo of a New Zealand beach, found on the Pixabay site, shows us just how connected we all are, no matter where in the world we live. The seas and oceans may all have different names, but the oceans flow on our countries or continents no matter where we live. The ocean is important to us here in NZ, it's never far away for most of us. I know many of you live inland in large countries and rarely get to see the sea. So I thought I'd send you this little bit of New Zealand, an ocean that reaches out and connects us all around the world no matter where we live.

@valmnz In Ireland I might well have swum in the water that is now lapping away at New Zealand. Curious thought.

I shudder to think what that water may have encountered in transit. but you can't help wondering where one ocean begins and the next one starts.

@xFiacre exactly. And here we can swim in the Tasman Sea in the morning and the Pacific Ocean in the afternoon.

@valmnz I swan in South Africa once - in the morning in the Atlantic and in the afternoon in the Indian Ocean a few miles round the coast. Weird.

@just4him I received my second monthly payment the other day and the two months combined since launch are enough to pay for my Melbourne trip in April.

Switzerland has no sea and I miss it. We lives so many years facing the Mediterranean and I loved the smell of the saline water. We cannot have everything. Thank you for this beautiful photo.

So what is the furthest point you can get from the sea in NZ? As in how many miles?

@JudyEv I just looked up and the widest point is 450 km. But of course there's mountain ranges of various heights in the way whichever island you cross east to west. Where I live it's about 35 minutes to the Tasman Sea in the west and about two and a half hours to the Pacific Ocean in the east.

@valmnz Thanks for the info. Sometimes a short distance has absolutely no bearing on how long a journey might take you.

I live very close to the ocean here on the East Coast in New England. We even have a small beach in my town, though it's not really on the ocean proper, just a tidal estuary. I spent most of my childhood summers at the ocean, and it would be difficult for me to live so far away that I couldn't smell the salty air on a misty morning.
