As you can see, the "Dam Road is closed ahead". This is at the reservoir. We went for a New Year's drive. One of our traditions. The Army Corps of Engineers is working on a project on the dam this winter. The eagles do not care. Eagles nest around the lake and the reservoir in our area in the winter. The purpose of our drive was to look for eagles. We found them. However our camera is not good enough to get a good shot. The birds are beautiful as they soar up over the lake and touch down looking for fish. We also saw them sitting in trees. We were able to go drive around the lake, just not over that dam road. Darn it.

We have falcons here but not eagles. They are beautiful birds.

There is so much to see when we look outdoors. We have hawks, possibly falcons, I am not sure. Eagles are only here in the winter.

I'm glad that eagles were at least able to get through and continue their "tradition". Hope the views were decent from where you were - I'll bet the eagles were glorious!

Eagles are at an advantage not relying on road. I understand that if they have a successful nest, they return to the same spot. It was really a treat to watch them.

@GardenGerty True - and it may have actually helped them to have that road closed so as not to be disturbed.

@much2say My friend who is a photographer, with good cameras, has gotten good shots of them in this area for years. Maybe the slower traffic is good for them this year, though.

what a lovely way to spend the afternoon ... shame your camera could not capture them... I can see eagles soaring in the mountains just behind us... but as I live near the sea ... soI get to watch the sea gulls and cormorants. ... which I enjoy also....

I was going to look up cormorants. Can't remember if I did. I had wondered if we had them in Kansas. We have "lake gulls" in the summer. They love to come eat the bugs after the farmers plough.

It's nice to be able to get out and see sights like that. What sort of eagles are they?

These are bald eagles. The national bird of the United States. They prefer fish as their prey and are often seen around waterways.

@GardenGerty They are beautiful. I once saw a group of them at Red Wing in the Mississippi valley, MN.

We were not happy about the road but the sign did tickle us.

I am sure the guys who programmed the sign had some fun with the very well intended pun. Hate road construction of any kind even if I know it must be done.

At least there was a detour. Yes, some people "see red" but I tend to "see orange". I was a school bus driver for many years.
