More thoughts on the Rose Bowl and Rose Bowl parade

One of the strange things about my trip to the Rose Bowl last week was that I enjoyed the parade as much as the game. Everyone there was in good spirits, and it was evident that a lot of effort had been put in by the various bands that payed, not to mention the people who make those floats. We had seats right on the street, and I was able to scamper to the pavement and take picture of some passing bands and floats from ground level. The family in front of us was kind and said "no problem." Have you ever been surprised by how nice people can be to each other? I think this photo is of the University of Washington band.

That's super you were able to go to the parade and have seats at street level to get great pictures like this. I'm glad the people in front of you were nice.

@crossbones27 It was a good time. I like it when I see humans treating each other well.

I was pleasantly surprised by how nice and civilized a large group of people could be. Especially around a "sporting event." Even at the game, people were civilized, and after the game, I saw Washington and Ohio State fans laughing together as they searched for their cars.

Sometimes I am surprised by how people can be nice to strangers.

@TheHorse When I walk in the morning all people I meet say Hello. It's what I love to live in the countryside.

@LadyDuck I enjoyed that too in Iowa (a rural state with many small towns). Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, the "norm" is to ignore those who pass you by on the streets or the bike path. I don't like that so I slightly "invade" others' spaces by saying hello. The reaction I get is mostly positive.

I forget. Is it normal for people to at least nod hello in Switzerland? Here, there's an urban v. rural difference.

We went one year. Pretty neat watched from the roof tops. I liked the Stanford band, came out acting all drunk with fake kegs. Funny because they so smart and were acting like me.

@TheHorse Indeed, think they were drunk. Maybe not so smart after all. Even I could not pull that one off.

I'm not surprised that they did something...special. But weren't they the ones that went on to the field too early back in the 90s and gave Cal a surprise win?

It is wonderful when people are like that at a big gathering.

I generally avoid big gatherings here in the Bay Area, except for baseball games and concerts where most of the attendees are greying hippies, like me.

Yes they do surprise me, but working with people who have cancer I meet some of the best people, all are humble and will lend an ear when needed. Sometimes I like a good parade, been years since I seen one.

Have you read Kitchen Table Wisdom, by Rachel Naomi Remen? It's a beautiful book that had me in tears several times. She is an oncologist who had many "epiphanies" working with people with cancer. I recommend it strongly if you haven't read it. It could change your life, as it did mine.

I liked the way the people on the floats were wavingat us and we waved back. The band members couldn't do that, though. They were very "disciplined."

Haven't been to a parade in ages. I guess I have gotten tired of the same old thing over and over.

Well, I live in the south, so being nice is in our DNA. I was surprised when a gentleman struck up a conversation with me at a hotel cafeteria when I had breakfast in New York City. That disproved what I'd heard about New Yorkers.

I find people are mostly in a good mood at these kinds of events.
