I feel as if I have cooked all day. I have gotten other things done as well, but I am stretching my brain to make sure I fix enough food of a good variety. At the hospital the only time they served bread was breakfast or if you opted for a sandwich or burger. They always served fruit, vegetables and dairy as well.Main dish meat portions. At home, we have a variety of soups, beans, and legumes, as well as some of the other things. I am accustomed to having more bread. Supper tonight was turkey in gravy and stuffing. Brussels sprouts, fruit and dairy shake or smoothie. I will have Bob drink hot chocolate before bed tonight. I have been here a little bit, and read and responded some. There have also been medical phone calls. When the kitchen is done, I think I will go read a book in bed. Sweet dreams to all of you.

There's two things you can't get in a hospital: good food, and rest. Usually what you want when you're sick is food and rest. Go figure. Glad things are going better.

Their food was remarkably good for hospital food. Always low fat and low salt, though. He was allowed a packet of salt with his meals. The rest issue is awful. That is why he is better at home.

Did the doctor inform you that some foods should not be taken in case of anemia (or low hemoglobin)? Some dark, leafy greens also contain oxalates, which inhibit iron absorption. All those food interfere with iron absorbtion: whole-grain cereals, grapes, corn, and sorghum, all foods rich in gluten (bread, pasta and other products made with wheat, barley, rye, or oats). Foods that contain oxalic acid, such as peanuts, parsley, and chocolate. I know because my husband was seriously anemic and the doctor suggested a strict diet with no bread and pasta.

We do very little bread, and his hemoglobin is coming back up. He has not been restricted on anything. I knew spinach had oxalates, but had not been told to restrict them. We concentrate a lot on potatoes and squash and mild peppers. He dislikes corn. I do not think we prepare much with sorghum in the US. What or how would it be used in meals?

@LadyDuck Bob had beef, and eggs, and fish once or twice. Some chicken. Here at home he gets eggs and beef and turkey mostly. We buy russet potatoes.

@GardenGerty sorghum is used in most "multi grain" breads, it's never used alone. Russet potatoes are the richest in iron. Anyway the body absorb faster and better the iron contained in meats. When my husband was hospitalized, they gave him red meats every day, until his iron level increased.

I'm just curious but is there any reason to stay away from bread just because the hospital does?

My idea is that there is more nutrition in the vegetables and such and too much bread would fill him up so he could not eat the other foods. @LadyDuck says that her husband was restricted when he was anemic because of the gluten. My husband does not like pasta in general.

Mostly I rest as much as I need. I also need to be more active for my own health.

I think the hospital food was better than average and it had good variety and choices if you did not like their "special."
