Paradise Fire - We Moved to Santa Fe

Santa Fe, New Mexico
January 14, 2019 7:35am CST
My mother and I (and my 3 birds) evacuated from the Camp Fire to a Redding motel with a neighbor. We were lucky to get out. Thousands of people -- both the towns of Paradise and Magalia, plus locations across the canyon from us -- were evacuating at once, so there was nowhere closer to stay. I'm not going to tell a gruesome tale, we were luckier than some because we left fairly early. There was a lot of smoke and I could hear propane tanks blowing up, but we did not escape with flames licking at the car, we didn't see anyone on fire. There were many people getting out on foot. It took us two days to find where my father had been taken. He was in a nursing home there in Paradise which was also destroyed, they hadn't been able to follow their evacuation plan -- most places couldn't simply because the fire was advancing so quickly. And the wind was gusting in different directions so it carried the fire all over town. Almost everything was lost. Nurses carried nursing home residents out to various vehicles -- my dad was put in a cop car and taken to Enloe Hospital in Chico to be checked out, then driven to a nursing home in Auburn.. My son and daughter in law arrived at the motel in Redding and totally rescued us. I didn't have a clue where we were going to go. Because of the thousands of homeless, housing in the area was full. People were living in tents in parking lots. I applied for FEMA housing relief, but fortunately didn't have to take it, because Devin and Kendall brought us home with them to Santa Fe. We arrived at our new home the day after Thanksgiving. We are going to be fine. Devin did a GoFundMe for us and my mom has received her fire insurance funds. We are in a guest room at Devin's house, and in July we'll move over to the attached apartment they own. Someone is leaving there and her lease will be up in July. We really did not want to barge in and displace her, so we are fine here till July. It's weird thinking we have to get everything at once, but we can slowly get things since we're right next door. I have never experienced so many ups and downs. Sometimes we still get depressed -- Paradise/Magalia was our home for about 40 years i-- 41 for my mom, 38 for me. But we have experienced amazing human kindness since this fire. Trust me, America is still all willing to reach out and help you when you are feeling almost unbearable loss, no matter politics or beliefs. People who have little themselves will give you the shirt off their backs and a big hug. We are so much luckier than many, having family to step up and take us in. We can now say "we survived the Fire of '18."

What a terrible experience. I can imagine the pain to move out from a house where you lived 40 years. At least you made it and I hope you can now enjoy your new life in Santa Fe.

WhileI did read about the fire,it is different when reading this from a person I know..well virtually. It must have been a horrific incident. Sorry about you having to leave home but glad that you are making a new one. It's the family that makes a home

I visited once after Devin moved here. I really loved it here and thought I would probably move here when my parents were gone. I was tired of the hot long summers in Paradise (and the increasing fire danger.) But of course you never think it is going to happen this way.

Oh, my! Reading your experience brought tears to my eyes. I had no idea this horror affected you and your family. I'm glad you are safe and have a place to stay, thanks to your wonderful loving son and his wife. It's nice to know that Americans are as wonderful as they've always been to those in need. Best of luck to you.

Such good and bad news. I'm so sorry as I gather you've lost everything but you were also one of the lucky ones to have someone to take you in. So your mother will stay with you? And is your father very far away? I'm not too good on US geography.

Watched the fire on the news, in the UK, but very hard to imagine such a terrible and destructive event. Glad everyone got to safety

Seeing those fires on tv was heartbreaking so I can't even imagine being evacuated during one. I'm so sorry you lost your home and hope you can find and make new memories in Santa Fe.

I'm glad you were able to find a place to settle. My friends, Howie and Carol, lost everything as well. Miraculously, Holly, their horse, survived, only to succumb to back problems a year or so later. I'v been back a couple oftimes since the fire. Things are growing back, but it seems very quiet there. Howie and Carol are staying in their guest house, which somehow survived. Even the chickens and cats (except for one) survived. Sending positive thoughts your way.

I am so glad to see you back, I was just thinking of you the other day. I knew you were in California but not where so I didn't realize you had lost everything to the fire. I am so glad that you are in a great new place. Will you bring your dad down to New Mexico?

That was a terrible experience. I am glad you have your new home now. I have not read this in January and I was still in the Philippines and the wifi was very slow to manage.
