The Horse rear-ended and almost killed, but the true perpetrator gets away.

As I was driving home from Trader Joe's this evening, staring directly into the sun, a Jeep of some sort cut me off from right to left, entering the intersection though a stop sign to the right and causing me to slam on my brakes.
The driver behind me, who, like many inexperienced suburban drivers, was tailgating me, rear-ended me, sending me into spin, followed by a roll. I was then hit by an East-bound beer truck, which caused my airbag to deploy, smashing my glasses into my right eye, severing the optic nerve, and rendering me forever unable to play competitive sports.
My right eye-ball dangling from my head, and cupped gently in my hands, I chased down the vehicle that had caused the accident, which was actually stuck in traffic to the East, and wrote down their license plate number.
I apologized to the person who had rear-ended me, explaining that their Insurance Company would probably have to play for the accident, even though it was really caused by the person who had cut us both off.
OK, only the first paragraph is true. But I wondered, as I headed home, my heart pounding, whether the person behind me would have had to pay for the accident, had they rear-ended me.
Fortunately, as has happened before, I was able to brake and then accelerate, avoiding an accident. The person behind me was NOT tailgating (thank goodness) and the (probable teenager--I was near a high school) who cut me off was saved by my braking action and quick swerve.
Do you ever tire of saving others from their own stupidity?

You had me going there for a minute but then I was wondering, If you spun and rolled how did you chase the other car?? Very good story and yes, I had to do that the other day when two cars in a 10 min span both started to flip a U in front of me, one being a semi! I thought I was going to get crushed both times. Glad you were driving defensively and were able to avoid any harm.

I do tend to drive defensively. As Stephen Wright said, "Half of the people you know are below average." It's scary to think that when we're driving, we're putting our lives partially in the hands of people who are below average at driving. Better go take my anxiety meds.

Yes, I surely do.
It sounds like you saved yourself as well... and I'm glad you didn't have to re-enact a scene from a gory film!

@TheHorse I was thinking of Maximum Overdrive, but they're both Stephen King stories.

I occasionally tire of saving myself from others' stupidity.
You may want to sing John Prine's "The Accident" next time you're doing a show....

Well the step father of my husband had a similar accident 15 days ago. The air bag popped and broke his sternum and he also broke the foot that was trapped between the two pedals. At least he does not wear eyeglasses. I have to disable that stupid air bag.

@TheHorse It is dangerous if you are under a certain height and weight. I know that I can legally ask to have it disabled and I am going to ask this after what happened to the stepfather of my husband. Without the air bag he would have not been so badly hurt. I would have surely been killed.

It was good until you wrote about the spin and roll part.
Yes I do get tired of being the one and some day I just might not be fast enough.

Oh dear oh dear. I hope you are ok. Yes even though it might have been the stupid actions of the other person that caused the accident unfortunately the guy who back ended you will have to cough up as quite clearly he was either too near or driving too fast to stop safely.
