Are you stubborn?

There is an elder in our family who is quite stubborn and wont listen to what others have to say even if it is for his own good. He believes that everyone needs to listen to him because of his age and refuses to see the changes that have happened in the world. He thinks he knows it all. The people who have to deal with him are going mad because of his attitude. He even refuses to see his doctor now despite his health problems. Listening to all the stories about him from his children I am so grateful that my parents were reasonable and would at least listen to us before they decide on what they want to do. Are you stubborn? do you have someone like this in your family?

@LadyDuck Hmm.. I know someone like that, her daughter used to cry to me often. People accused the daughter of not caring for her mother. But if you knew the mother you knew the truth.

@sofssu People knew that both my brother and I cared for our mother. Even if I lived abroad I went twice a month to visit her. My brother went every Saturday and Sunday. She wanted to be independent and we respected her will.

I am stubborn. I come from a long line of "stubborns". I have stubborn grandchildren. Sometimes there is sense involved and sometimes there is not. If you keep on him or make a deal with him perhaps he will come around.

No, I listen to what other people might say and discern if they can really be good for me. I am open for changes and suggestions if they are to make me well.

Some people are stubborn throughout life, no matter their age. I tend to keep an open mind depending on the issue. No one in my family is considered stubborn, thank goodness.

@DianneN Having an open mind is always good for everyone most importantly for us. Stubbornness in some thing can be good as long as it does not cause others some kind of pain.

That reminds me of one in an office "the know-all". When a new staff joined, he was told about this character and he said he knows how to tackle such. At the first opportunity, he told the "know-all" that his attitude is not liked by others. His response was quite typical of him "I know that too". I listen to others but make my stand clear. I am ready to be flexible if the need arises - siva

@sofssu Yes, be open and have a listening ear. In fact, I consider myself fortunate to study, work and live in societies with different beliefs. It has enriched my life; the world is my oyster, why restrict myself? siva
