Theoretically yes it should be free but as the sayimg goes we get what we pay for so the better it's funded the more quality we get. State funded Universities and institutions are also good but they are not a hundred percent free. This is my opinion.

It is the case in my country since about 150 years, from kindergarten to college included. It is the interest of any state to have a well educated population, and then a good investment for the future.

@marlina Not exactly, the rich are paying for the poor : half of the population does not pay any income tax in France, but every child has the same chance to do college studies. Colleges are selective in France, but the selection is done on intelligence, not on money.

Silly me, I get all these tax statements that say I'm giving X amount to the local school system through my payroll tax, my car registration tax, and my property tax. And you're telling me it's not free? Question: if it's free, then are the professors going to work for free? Of course not. Someone has to pay their salary. Now, having said that, I think it should be mandated that tuition ONLY covers salaries and doesn't go into the pockets of the multi-millionaire basketball coach or the "alumni fund." Let all of the other fundraisers pay for that stuff.

@JohnRoberts — for a long time Loserville, I mean Louisville’s women’s basketball games were free. I think the baseball games still are, except for the weekend they play Kentucky.

@FourWalls The state should pay for the teachers.Mostly homeowners foot the bill.

The sports dept would argue revenue generated from men's football and basketball pays those salaries and then some. Whatever. That revenue does support the women's sports and lesser sports which generate nearly zip.

I do not feel that post-secondary education should be free. I feel that the early years, from junior kindergarten up thru until the end of high school should be paid for. Our kids start JK here full time at the age of 4 and are in the school system until they graduate from grade 12, although they are only legally bound to remain in school until the age of 16. Oh, and thanks for changing the subject about the weather. It IS cold, it IS also January, we need to remember that also.

In most European countries it's free until College degree. You pay if you want to continue to University.

@amadeo Not here, education is free because it's mandatory to send kids to school until they are 16.

Hm. That's a difficult question. They say a 4 year degree is equal to what a high school diploma used to be. But on the other hand not everyone is cut out for college - and there is no shame to that, either. I think that maybe something like a 2 yr degree should be free. That only certain fields should require higher education.

I think it should be free, I think the fact that it's not in the USA is another sign of the wealthy just trying to make it harder for everyone else to rise up. If our President thinks we have 5 billion to build a wall, think of how many college educations that could pay for, how many teachers salaries that could help. Its insane what our priorities are I think.

@amadeo I can't see any of the Ivy League Universities accepting students for free, but do think that state supported colleges and universities should allow anyone who qualifies. I can't see turning away any serious student who qualifies for a higher education. However, it will never happen due to economics.

Yes, up until college. No free rides at that level. People who want free college education forget it's taxpayers footing the bill and we are so taxed to the max as it is.

I think so. In our country state colleges and universities have started this program. Free tuition to college students, but I think there is some matriculation fee which is minimal.

I think basic education should be free but teachers should be paid a decent salary as it is one of the professions which shapes the life of the next generation. Due to lower salaried as compared to other professions, highly educated people don't want to become teachers.. Just an observation..

I would say yes, or at least more affordable. I know plenty of people who wanted to further their education but didn't for the simple fact that they either couldn't afford it, or because they didn't want to be in debt for years already.

Yes of course it should be.Not only is it fair that everyone gets the same opportunities regardless of wealth. Having an educated population is going to be good for society as a whole.

A lot of countries do offer free education including University level. If it was my decision I would include education for practical skills such as plumbing, electrical work etc and give them the same respect as academic qualifications.
