A 'guzinta' - a rope that goes into the water

While we were on our hired house-boat we motored upstream as far as we could go. There was the odd house that we could see from the river and in places, evidence that an area was used. If you look closely at the photo, you can see two ropes hanging from a tree. They are a little to the left of the middle of the photo. I guess you have seen these before. You stand high on the bank, holding the rope tightly then swing out over the water and let go. Of course, you need to be sure that the river is deep enough that you don’t hit the bottom and damage your neck and/or spine. I don't know why there are two ropes. Next to the rope is a ladder that allows you to get more easily up the bank again. In several places we saw plastic material which formed a slide from the top of the bank down into the water. I think it would be nice to have a house alongside the river.

I think that there are two ropes because (enlarging the photo) the shorter one seems to be broken, impossible to use it anymore. A house near a river would be nice.

The nearest crocodiles are 11,000 miles away so anyone swimming would be pretty safe.

The nearest crocodiles are 11,000 miles away. You only find them in the most northern parts of Australia.

@JudyEv Some places along the James River have rope swings..and I bet some of the private owners do here too, just not in this community. Never heard of guzunda or guzinta.

I saw this with a unique rope here, I do not see the interest of having 2 ropes. The banks are often flooded ; during a big flood in the early 1990's, I have seen houses with water up to the roof or up to the second floor. A house near a river is a bad good idea.

This river floods occasionally too but rarely gets high enough to enter the houses. I can't think of anything much worse than trying to clean out a house that has been flooded.

I have seen that but they also add a wheel tire at the end of the rope where they could sit as they swing and jump into the water.

@JudyEv None. The breeze either blows them away or the fish jump out of the water to eat them. Several birds do, too. I've only had one bite from something in all the years we've been here. We get more in Connecticut.

A 'guzinta' was what my Mum and her contemporaries called division in arithmetic - you know, 3 guzinta 9 three times, or whatever. No idea how it would have been spelled though! I used to live in a boat on the river - it was the best place I ever lived, although it was tiny!

I think maybe the short one has broken at some time. It would be difficult to catch hold of it without a hook or somesuch to grab it with.
