Hats off to my mother - and to all mothers

Today is my mother’s birthday. She died in 2014 at the age of 104 – and a half. She liked us to add the half. I was remembering what a wonderful mother she was and what huge changes she saw in her lifetime.
She was born into a poor farming family and had to leave at a young age to help out at home. For a few years she and her brother would ride into town in the dark to ‘night school’ for a bit more education. For the rest of her life, she could recite much of the poetry that she learnt at school.
Just before she was married at 27, she had all her teeth removed. This was pretty much standard practice at the time as it saved the husband dental costs later. She was married in a brown suit. My father died in 2000, by which time they’d been married 63 years.
Two days before her first wedding anniversary, she had twins (a boy and a girl) but it wasn’t until the first had been delivered that they discovered there was a second baby on its way. I was born eight years later on the twins’ birthday.
She washed by hand for a family of five until about 1956 when she got her first washing machine. We didn’t have mains power but a 32 volt ‘plant’ which supplied limited power for lights and appliances though not the fridge.
Water for the garden and orchard was bucketed out on wash-day. She was a crack shot with a rifle and shot many a parrot which came into the orchard. When she appeared with a gun, the cats would fall in behind in anticipation of a free feed.
At 99 ½, she had a hip replacement and her last few years were spent in a nursing home. Thankfully she never developed dementia but remained ‘with it’ to her last few days.
Her story is not unusual for its time but hats off to all mothers who worked long and hard for their families.
The photo is of Mum with the twins.

My mother, born in 1899, lived to 99 and saw many of those same changes. She was born in east Texas and walked alongside the wagon several hundred miles to west Texas, where her father settled.

@JamesHxstatic That's a shame. The old graveyards here tell their own stories of young women dying and of course, many young children.

Wow! Your mother lived to be 104.She ten years survived my mother who passed away in 2015.It surprises me that all her teeth were pulled out at the age of 27.

What an amazing life she had. I feel sorry for all those people that had all their teeth removed at such a young age just to save money later. I can just imagine those cats waiting for the parents to fall. I'm glad you have so many happy memories of your mom.

Sounds like your mom was a wonderful woman. You are so lucky to have had her for so many years and she was blessed to live so long. My mom was always lively and happy and I thought she would live to at least a 100 but she got ill and I lost her when she was 84 back in 1996. Love the photo of your mom. Of course, our moms continue to watch over us.

@JudyEv I still miss my mother almost every day. It was just so much easier to say, Hey, mom what do you think I should do? Instead of figuring it all out by myself.

That's true and your Mum's personality shines out in your stories about her. Mothers are very special aren't they?

@RasmaSandra Some of us don't become truly 'independent' until it is forced on us perhaps.

You're a candidate then to be a centenarian, Ms. Judy, because you have it in your genes :)

To have a sound mind at that age is commendable. You are right All mothers go through some hardship or the other My mother had little money but she managed well.

That is amazing that you all had the same birthday. That sounds pretty standard living here too at one time. My grandmother raised her kids like that.

@JudyEv But my poor grandmother raised 10 kids like that. I would have probably dumped some of them at an orphanage.
Especially some of those rotten boys she had.

She sounds like such a strong person. The strength behind a family is the mom.
Thanks for sharing her story.

Wow your mother lived that long and hats off to her. I can just imagine how it was in the olden days when there were no machines to make things easier for doing household chores. Everything was manual labor. So they really knew well and way much better than us.

OH dear the poor woman losing her teeth at such a young age. She sounds like a remarkable mother. They certainly had it tough back then. I guess they were used to it. What she used to do then would probably kill have the younger generation these days!

Kids nowadays have no idea sometimes but of course they have their own very real challenges too. And in a way my mother's story was probably pretty typical for those times.
