Some encouragement

Today was Bob's first day to see the VA urologist. It was a good appointment. The doctor is going to re run some tests and do possibly some biopsies as well to make sure of what he thinks the problem is. If he has radiation cystitis, which is what he believes to be the problem, he is going to treat Bob with hyperbaric oxygen. He thinks he will not have to have any surgical treatment for his prostate. He said it should be continuing to shrink. It is encouraging that first he wants to run these tests and see for himself how the insides of Bob look. We like this doctor. So, after the appointment, we hung around in town, (Wichita, Ks.) and went over to Buffet City for some Asian food.Just to make sure that things were going smoothly with what they had done for him today. I napped in the car, Bob is napping now. It is good to see a doctor who seems to know what he is doing.

A hyperbaric chamber? Is that the same as hyperbaric oxygen? Those are really popular with athletes wanting to heal quickly.

Exactly. That is what he says works well. This doctor has not used it himself but says he had colleagues who did. When I read about it I read that it also helps with stroke recovery and anemia. We feel very excited about this.

What a relief to find a doctor who seems to know his stuff! I hope he is right and won’t need surgery on his prostate!

He will do biopsies while he is also doing some scopes of the bladder.

@GardenGerty ouch I had a scope done and it hurt so bad to urinate after. They say it’s even worse for men. I feel so bad for your husband. I am glad to hear they will do the biopsies at the same time so he won’t have to go through that more then once.

He had a name for what he believes this is, and that was good. He has come from a much larger metropolitan area than we have been seeking treatment in. Wider experience base.

I am so glad that you have found a doctor that looks good. It does sound promising that he wants to run tests before jumping in with a treatment.

@GardenGerty I like when a doctor really checks out everything him/herself.

It's good that you found a doctor whom you like. I had an unfortunate experience with a doctor before who made me feel worried all the time.

The doctor we had was not bad, but was not familiar with a case like Bob's.

So thankful to hear this! You know, I make fun of the VA, as do many others who are in their care, but I must say when the "chips are down" they're as good as any private sector place. In fact, it was a VA nephrologist who told me to go to a gynecologist after my "civilian" doctor said the pain I was experiencing was "too high to be female trouble." The VA doctor said, "Anything from your neck to your knees can be 'female trouble.'" Turns out, he was right: it was an ovarian tumor.

I have heard things that were not positive about the VA. I was not impressed with the doctor at the neighborhood clinic, that our former primary care sent Bob to. However, we have bumped up to a specialist level and the specialists are usually very good.
