Good News On Groundhog Day!

I'm not a superstitious person and don't believe in all the little rituals we humans love to participate in but sometimes they are just fun! And when two North American Groundhogs didn't see there shadow on Feb.2nd which means it'll be an early Spring-- I'll take it!
Tradition has it that if these now famous groundhogs-- Wiarton Willie, Shubenacadie Sam and Punxsutawney Phil see there shadows there will be an early Spring and only 6 more weeks of Winter.
I'm guessing it means an early Spring for the area around their hometown and since Wiarton Willie is Canadian and relatively close to where I live, I'll take good old Willie's welcome prediction for an early Spring in my area.
The groundhog is a mammal from the squirrel family that is often a nuisance to farmers because they burrow down and make holes in the land and then have the nerve to eat farmers crops as well!
I think there are more famous Spring-Predicting-Groundhogs in other cities but these three are the ones I always hear about.
This Winter has been very grey and January has been very cold so I am really looking forward to that early Spring as is everybody else. If this turns out well and there really IS an early Spring this year- I may just get into this Groundhog Day thing a little more.
How about you? Any Spring predicting signs where you live or maybe you have a Groundhog of your own?

We had cloudy skies and no shadows on Ground Hog Day. I can say though, I am looking forward to spring if for no other reason than to get rid of all the ice storms we're having. In winter, give me snow, not ice, and I'll be happy.

@MarymargII Our storm yesterday produced more ice than they predicted and less snow.

Well at least we can expect for most of our areas to have about forty days of winter weather whether it is sunny or not and spring will always come visit us. Unless it's a year when winter stays longer than into April and we see summer weather without getting much of spring. We've had that before, where spring was too short.

Haha! Sorry it turned out like that Anna- boohoo! But then these things are just for fun! I have heard of Candlemas though and seriously I thought it was a religious Holiday of some sort.

It is- and I always have liked seeing the results of it- this time it worked to get me smiling but lets see if it pans out! Do you have it in Australia?

@MarymargII No and nothing like it as far as I know. There are various events that people believe in. My Mum would say it would be early winter if there were more ants than usual out and about - just stuff like that.

I sure hope those Groundhogs are right! It's been a mild winter for me, very little snow or sustained cold, but being a spring/summer person this news is welcome..

From the weather they are having at home I would say an early spring is unlikely, Here is Florida, it is hard to tell lol

A customer at work told me what the groundhogs found out on that day and I can easily say I haven't gotten into that spirit of things overmuch because they're predictions are never right for my part of the world. I'm guessing it would be a miracle to have spring set in the second week or March in Canada as well, but maybe some areas get warmer temps faster than others? I can't imagine they'd be faster than Michigan though.
I relate the idea of the groundhog to having a cold.
If you have a cold and don't take any meds for it, it's supposed to only last seven days, but if you do take meds for it, it heals faster in only one week. Seriously. Who wouldn't take one over seven, hmm? That could also be the same thing with how many people are willing to purchase things like say ears of corn when they come in a baker's dozen for a certain price even when it's the same as if they were sold separately. It's the marvels of marketing.
Has your area ever had spring in the middle of March, Mary? We might get crocuses and tulips by then, but we always get another snow storm in April sometime, but I don't hold my breath on what those pesky groundhogs might decide.

It must be really awesome to look forward to something as beautiful as Spring. Let's hope the groundhog theory is true.
