Film overload - three in one night

The photo is of a tree tying itself in knots as did some of the people in the films we saw last night. I’ve been mentioning the International Film Festival that has been held in here. Despite our best intentions we weren’t able to see as many of the films as we would have liked. The Festival finished yesterday and we intended to see two films but ended up seeing three. All were well worth watching. The first was set in Tokyo and called Shoplifters. It centred round a family living in poverty in suburban Tokyo. The second was Woman At War about an environmental activist waging a one-woman war against the aluminium industry. This was set in Iceland, a country with very different terrain to Australia. The third was C’est La Vie, a French film which was a whole lot of laughs from beginning to end. The only downside was that we bought a snack from a nearby fast-food place before the last film and I had a seafood salad. Sometimes I have an intolerance to something in seafood and/or Asian dishes and I start to itch badly. Then I come up in welts. This happened last night. Once I realised I was scratching here, there and everywhere, I stopped. Luckily, it didn’t get worse and an anti-histamine when I got home ensured I had a good night’s sleep and I’m fine again this morning.

I hope next time you won't get a seafood dish. Do you know if you have any food allergies? I'm going to have to check out those films but I'm not sure I'd find them on Amazon Streaming Video.

I had a referral once to an allergy specialist but never managed to get to see him. I'm sure it's nothing major - probably just one of the spices they us. But I don't like my lips swelling. It's getting too close to my throat.

@rebelann I know allergy to seafood can be very severe. I wouldn't wait if the symptoms got worse.

@judyev Isn't itching just such an annoying thing? My wife itches in reaction to medication for something and when she takes it she just destroys her arms in less than half an hour scratching at them and they are left bleeding.

@JudyEv I must tell my wife to try that. She would try anything when the itch starts.

@xFiacre Has she tried anti-histamine tablets? One is called Polaramine. They work well and also give me a great sleep which is a massive bonus.

Thanks goodness I don't go that far. Sometimes putting carb soda in a bath will help stop itching.

Well it sounds like you had a good time, other than the allergic reaction!

Yes thanks. The movies were great. In the end we saw seven out of twelve so that wasn't too bad. There were a couple we missed that I would have liked to have seen but them's the breaks.

I hate when this happens, I never know what caused the problem, but it only happens if I eat out or I buy ready made food.

@JudyEv I am pretty sure it's some kind of preservatives, MSG is also forbidden here. I thought that may be they use peanut oils, this could be my problem.

So it happens to you too? MSG is forbidden here so it shouldn't be that. I am allergic to sulphur so I wonder if any preservatives in the food have sulphur in them.

It seems you had an interesting few films, but too bad about your allergic reaction. Best to stay away from those foods.

I'm wondering if it's the filler that was in the salad as I quite often have prawns at home.

@JudyEv An allergist can test you to find out what causes your allergies.

@Shavkat She remains remarkably cheerful. I would be impossible to live with I think if I had all her allergies.

Be careful with that intolerance, it can become more serious. I always carry Benadryl with me, I had to use it when I took a cold medicine that started to close my throat.

Thanks. That's what worries me too. I would like to know what causes this. It happens so seldom I usually have not idea what causes it but it does seem to be after eating Chinese of some sort, and usually seafood.

Yes, that sort of spoilt the last film a bit as I had to sit there trying not to scratch.

I didn't want to miss the film but if the swelling round the mouth had got any worse, i would have been out of there like a shot.

Being itchy drives me crazy. I'm currently recovering from an unintended encounter with poison ivy so just thinking about being itchy makes me want to scratch my legs. I'm glad the anti-histamine provided the necessary relief!

@SophiaMorros I don't know how extensive the itching is but dissolving carb soda in a bath sometimes helps relieve itching.

We don't have poison ivy here but it does sound very nasty. It can be almost impossible not to scratch itchy places.

@JudyEv I was fortunate to be taught a neat trick for dealing with poison ivy itches. Running the hottest water I can stand over the itchy spot seems to "reset" the nerve endings and temporarily take the itchiest away. Poison ivy, when scratched (whether intentionally or by accident) only gets itchier. Over the past couple of weeks I've taken quite a few scalding hot showers right before bed.
