Who is "Jussie Smollett" and why did he "stage" an attack on himself?

I keep getting news feeds about a man named Jussie Smollett who apparently staged an attack on himself in my native Chicago, employing two colleagues in the acting business to "commit" the attack.
Why on earth would he do such a thing? As an actual victim of several race-based attacks in Chicago (I was an ethnic minority in the neighborhood in which I grew up), I am resentful of anyone who would stage a race- or sexual-orientation-based attack.
The reason? It trivializes (and renders suspect) REAL race- or sexual-orientation-based attacks that occur in our Country every day.
I've read that he is an actor, as were the two people he hired to "attack" him. Is this some kind of publicity stunt? I have no idea. Have you heard about this case?

I've heard that Kamala Harris and Cory Booker are under suspicion due to the timing of this 'attack', coinciding with their anti-lynching bill and Jussie Smollet's endorsement of Kamala Harris.
Frankly I'm amazed lynching isn't already a federal crime.

You know, almost from the instant I heard about this I had my doubts. He claimed he was attacked by people saying, "This is MAGA country."
CHICAGO??? The home of former president Obama? "MAGA country"? Ha!
Why did he do it? I don't know. I've heard claims his character was going to be "killed off" on Empire. Or was it such hatred for Tr*mp and his ilk that he staged it, sure that everyone would believe it because it was blamed on Tr*mp supporters.
I just saw he's been indicted for filing a false report. I think part of his sentence, if he's found guilty, would be to care for the memorial to James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in Mississippi. That way, he could see what real racism is and why he shouldn't make fun of it.

Been hearing about it for a few days now. He needs to be given the harshest sentence they have.

They are now suggesting he did it because he was unhappy with his salary of $100,000 per episode. The whole thing stinks if you ask me. I think his REAL motivation is to try to perpetuate a false narrative that homophobia and racism still exists. What a bunch of garbage.

I'm sure racism and homophobia still exist in the hearts and minds of some. But I find both to be less prevalent than they were in my childhood days. Jim, are you aware of which group perpetrates the most "hate crimes" per capita, and which group is most often the "victim" per capita?

@TheHorse I don't have those stats. Wish I did. As for your first statement I agree. It exists, but not nearly to the level it once did, and unfortunately there is an industry of racism these days and those who want it to exist simply because they profit from it. Sharpton and Jackson readily come to mind. But there are others.

some people nowadays are purposely trying to start race/orientation wars.
there was a woman local who couldn't queue properly at the store and when of course she didn't get waited on,immedietly started screaming at people saying it was a racial issue.no,it's because your butt wasn't in line.

You would think an actor who is a creative person and making money not just some on the street bum would not do such things and create such situations. Here is more that I found about him.
