Kidney Disease

So, did you know that hypertension (high blood pressure) can lead to kidney disease? At my doctor's visit today she went over my history and said that my blood pressure has been high for so long that she is concerned for the health of my kidneys. Now I knew that my blood pressure was a cause of concern because it could lead to a heart attack or stroke. But my previous doctor never mentioned the likelihood of kidney disease or kidney failure. So they want me to go back in 3 week for lab work and the week after that to go over the results. For now, I'm on a blood pressure medicine to be taken daily, and to start making adjustments in my diet and exercise of course. Fun, fun, fun.

I am surprised that no Doctors ever told you that high blood pressure can lead to kidney failure or damage. This is because high blood pressure can cause arteries around the kidneys to narrow.

I started researching it online when I got home. Yeah, my last doctor was the first to say anything about my BP at all, and she just kept pointing out sroke and heart attack.

@nonersays Doctors should spend more time to explain the risks to their patients. I am glad that now you know.

High blood pressure is sooo scary because a lot of people have no idea that they have it! I certainly didn't know. And mine is linked to anxiety!

I've read that most people don't know they have it. I find that odd, because I have very clear physical signs when mine is super high. (headaches and dizzyness being big ones) I'm sure my depression/anxiety plays a part in mine but my life long horrible diet is likely the main cause.

@nonersays I had no symptoms regarding high blood pressure that I know of... it was a big surprise. I think anxiety is my biggest problem but I'm working on it!! Don't know if I will ever completely master it, but one day at a time!!

That is bad news. I'm glad they've put you back on tablets.

I am not on any medication, I stopped eating so much salt (aka tater chips) and my numbers went down. I also cut out most cheese.

I did that last time I was on meds. I dropped 30ish pounds, fixed my diet and was able to stop taking my meds. But my new healthy habits didn't stick when my stress/emotional eating kicked in again

I was told that when the doctor insisted I start taking a BP medication. I'm on a combo one in the morning and a different one at night but they've kept it in the low-normal range. I used to be on another medication as well but I've lost 50+ pounds so that became unnecessary.

I hope to be able to keep it lower without medicine too. My previous doctors never mentioned the kidney thing....just put a lot of emphasis on the heart-attack/stroke probability.

Yes I was aware of that. I take medication for high blood pressure. I also had a heart attack. Hope you will get good results from your lab work.

Thank you. I'll be happy if it says no lasting damage was done. If I kept up with the scary high numbers I've been having I would have had to had a heartattack or stroke sooner rather than later.

You know I wake up early but not enough time for an exercise. Recently I have been feeling that headache lately.
