I always buy a phone card when we travel abroad. In fact calling is not much important when we are abroad. It is important as we can use the internet connection to keep in with others and we can use Google Maps, Google translate and some other apps.
The internect connection charge will be rather expensive if I use my Chinese phone card and this is why I will buy a local phone card. My phone can use two sim cards and it doesn't matter.

I remember buying a phone card when I was in Bangkok and in Malaysia but I still used my roaming service phone sometimes.
