Unfortunately, it appears I have a fracture fragment from my fall on the ice

As some of you know I fell on the ice this past Tuesday and then worked my full shift a few hours later. It was actually one of my better days at work as my back didn't hurt at all nor did my ankle. But the outer ankle had been swelling each day so on Wednesday I called to make an appt with my family physician to get it checked out. Unfortunately, he is booked until this next Tuesday so he ordered an x-Ray to see it before then.
He told me to call Ortho. But because I did the windows first yesterday before getting the exray all the Ortho Dr's were closed. I did get ahold of my knee Dr and he will review my x-rays and let me know whether I can work while my foot heals but not until Tuesday.
It looks like I'll be off work until he checks out my x-rays. If needed I've been back long enough that I can get short term disability again. My concern is having the few days off until I find out what they say.
The findings say there is an osseous fragment noted on one surface making it suspicious for an avulsion fracture fragment. And no other fracture is identified.
I might find that resting the foot and icing it is their main course of action and maybe going work will be allowed although I do need it healed so my knee can get replaced as planned.
I'm hoping the secretary at my job can advise me on whether me being off a few days will impact my job or not since I've used up all my vacation days and time off.
Edited: the secretary said that if I bring a dr.s slip in that will be all that I need to ensure I keep my job.

To bubble wrap you seems a good idea. I think that this is what my husband would like to do, he has no reason to worry, it's a long time I do not hurt myself.

I know. It's as if I shouldn't leave the house, lol. Unfortunately, my husband wouldn't be any better off if he fell either.
My manager said she's going to bubble wrap me.

@LadyDuck I've not hurt myself after falling for several years now so I'm quite surprised this even happened. At least now I'll know to walk away if things don't look good.
Unfortunately, that's not always possible. Like a day or so before this happened when the parking lot seemed covered in ice. I realized it was the ice melting and then the rain making it looking like ice was everywhere. I had a small cart to help me keep my footing. There was no other way home so I had to walk in that to access my car.

My husband picked up and delivered to work my Dr slip so my job won't be affected. It's I was calling in just to have time off that would be a problem but I guess I don't needed to worry even though I've used up all my sick pay until April

@HazySue usually is be using my vacation days to cover my time off but I used them up last fall hoping that's all I needed to do to get my wound healed. Then when that didn't work I went to a wound center and it healed shortly thereafter.
I was concerned because I didn't have any days left to compensate. But, because I got a Dr slip they know I'm not making it up it something.

@MarshaMusselman I am glad to hear you won't have to worry about having no job to go back to. Some employers get a bit cranky about time off no matter what the reason.

Hmm, it seems I'm behind the times here since I haven't gotten to your response until now. I worked on most from this day over the past week, but decided I needed to check the notifs out on my computer since on my phone it won't let me go this far back.
I will be seeing an ortho dr for the first time tomorrow. Had I known that my knee dr was over booked and didn't feel confident about looking at my foot I would have made my appointment for the monday after writing this because he had an opening. But, my knee receptionist said I could see my knee dr that same week but on tuesday and then it worked out that didn't happen after all.
The appt was originally made for yesterday, Monday almost two weeks after my fall, but it got postponed until wed since he had a surgery that wasn't scheduled. I'm hoping by the time I see him I won't need a boot nor a cast or anything else as I think it's almost healed.
I've not needed any form of pain meds for three days now and I can flex my foot a bit where I couldn't last week. I could probably wiggle it around more, but I don't want to overdo things just yet. I will update everyone once I find out what the dr says.

@shaggin So, at first I thought the fragment fracture was that a tendon or ligament pulled a piece of bone off the rest of the bone sort of like when we chip a tooth. I got a print out of what the technician that reads xrays wrote and looked it up online as best I could.
Then last week, since I couldn't get in to see any doctors yet, I asked someone at the office of my knee dr if anyone there could at least look at the xray to see how bad it really was. It was then I found out that no bone was involved, but when they talked about a fracture in the location of my foot it was that the ligament or tendon pulled away from the bone, but didn't bring any of the bone with it.
Once the ankle doctor asked me where my pain was when it was painful, he realized the xray was an older injury since the area that swelled the first week wasn't in the right location of the first xrays.
Anyway, I possibly could have worked all along, but since I didn't really know what was going on I didn't want to make things worse.

Wishing you a fast recovery from that and I know how that feels except that I did not have a job to worry about luckily for me in that sense.

Did you have a similar thing on you ankle or elsewhere? Valerie had it on her knee and was out in a rehab facility for a month. They didn't do surgery for her and I'm guessing they won't for me either.
It's not very painful so I'm hoping that means it's not as bad as it sounds.

@MarshaMusselman
It was a lateral fracture and had caused me a lot of pain and swelling and everytime I put my foot on the floor there was a wooshing noise in my ears too and the doctor said you are very normal its like an alarm bell.
I could not see the funny side of it but he did.
It did take six weeks to heal completely and no problems after.

@lovinangelsinstead21 Did they put you in a cast? I did find out that the fracture on mine isn't a bone fragment that came off but they call it what they did for a ligament or tendon pulling from the bone. It still could be some time before I should use it normally, but hopefully not. I'm hoping I've done the main part of resting it already.

It's not as bad of an ouch as some things, but tomorrow I'll find out just how bad it is.

1) Since you were just here I thought I'd let you know that I have to wait another week to find out when I can return to work. But, I did find out that the bone or no portion of bone was pulled away by the tendon, but it was just the tendon itself that separated from the bone it was attached to. That might be why I have very little pain.
I'm hoping it also means that the tendon already reattached just from me taking off work this past week. I find out this coming Monday what I need to do next.

@porwest 2).
I found out today that no part of the bone was fractured it was only the tendon or ligament that was pulled away from the bone not a piece of bone with it.
There's another reply by me up there, I think as I wrote it when you were writing yours above.

Depending on the severity it could take up to eight weeks to heal even without surgery. I'll know more by Tues.

@Nevena83 I won't know until Tues if it's something I'll need to stay off my feet for it to heal or if it will heal even if I go back to work. That would be better for my pocket book, but I pay an insurance through work for if and when I have to be off for medical reasons and even though the pay is less than normal I at least get something for being off once I apply.
I'm hoping I won't need to be off that long though, so I'll know more in a few days time.

Now I really wish I left the bin alone without trying to retrieve it myself.
I'm hoping it heals easily without surgery.

I hope not either and I'm hoping I can work once I find how bad it really is. Since it really doesn't hurt I don't expect it to be very bad, but I'm trying to take it easy just in case until I know more.

I should have let the site of all that ice deter me from attempting my task. In hindsight leaving the bin there I until the ice melts is better than losing work over it.

I had x-rays this past week at the ortho for my injured knee, and I go tomorrow morning for an MRI. I'll follow up with my surgeon next Tuesday to see the extent of damage to my knee and what surgery I'll need to fix it. He's confident it will be a quick surgery. I sure hope he's right!
Hope your foot feels better soon!

@MarshaMusselman Tore my meniscus and possibly my MCL during a paintball tournament. I will definitely have to have surgery, but how long my recovery time will be will depend on the extent of the damage. I will find out next Tuesday when I meet with the surgeon to go over the results of my x-rays and MRI.

Ha! That would be nice although I need the one leg to hold the weight while the knee is swollen and they are on opposite sides. I found some info and most of these heal on their own but some need surgery.
I will know more after Tues

Oh, no, Marsha! You must be in so much pain. Did the ortho put a cast on your injured foot? I hope the swelling and pain subside soon to complete healing Take care, Marsha.

Actually the pain is minimal so I'm hoping the tear is minimal also and that maybe me not walking on it much this week has helped heal it already. I'm still trying to get into an Ortho Dr or get one to at least look at my x-rays so I can get some answers.
The swelling came and went and seems to be totally gone now. I'm going another Dr in the group will see me today or tomorrow.

I don't really know how bad it is although it barely hurts so I'm thinking it can't be that bad unless my ability to handle pain has improved in which case I shouldn't use that as a guide. Meaning whether it's painful it not.

Until I see the Dr I don't know what I said either. I did look at a bunch of anatomy pics and read articles and it may be that a piece of the top bone was pulled away by a tendon when I fell. If it wasn't pulled far it should heal on its own. How far it is I'll find out next week I hope.
Since it's not painful I'm hoping it's minimal and maybe already half healed.
