Keeping Bananas from Ripening

Many have probably read lots of ideas on how to keep bananas from getting ripe too soon. You buy them from the store and sometimes if you don't eat them soon, they go bad. They get ripe much too quickly most of the time. Especially in warmer weather. I tried a suggestion that has helped lately. You can tape the ends of the bananas with duct tape, or any thick tape you may have. This supposedly keeps the air from getting to the bananas. It works for mine. I have also read about keeping them in the refrigerator. Tried that one and it did not work. I also only buy 3-4 at a time. The less I buy the easier to eat in a few days. Tried any tips on keeping fruit fresh? What do you think of the tape idea?

Something that helps me is aluminum foil. Where you put a sticky tape, place the aluminum foil.

I find that if I put them into the fridge that they ripen a little slower. And of course I never buy more then about 3 at a time.

@CarolDM I think that it depends on how ripe they are when you put them into the fridge, as well as how long they have been just out at regular room temperature.

Putting them in a dark cupboard makes them ripen faster so I can see why putting them in a fridge wouldn’t work. I rarely try to keep mine from ripening. I try to get them to ripen faster so they will tasty for me to eat.

But I don't want them to ripen too fast, that is my point. I buy them and I may not want to eat them right away.

I wrap the end in aluminium foil, like @Nevena83, it works.

Yes, it saves a fresh banana and does not become too black.

I can eat 20 bananas in a day so I don't really have a problem.

I just used 3 way over-ripe bananas to make muffins. Interesting idea--if I remember it I'll try it next time.

I'm going to try the tape on the top, if it works I will be very happy....I love bananas but I never throw them away, if they get too ripe I toss them in the freezer and when I have enough I make Banana Bread... a favorite of mine.

I like that your tape idea works so well. We only buy four bananas at a time and replace them frequently. It seems we are at the fresh fruit and vegetable market at least twice a week.

Ours never stay around long enough. As it is, I have to grab a couple and hide them in the freezer for banana bread!!

Sounds like a workable idea. I always also buy just a few bananas at a time.
