Families can be horrible things

There is a well known saying: You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. Families can, at times, be some of the most unpleasant things in this world. Arguments and hostilities within families can go on for years with real or imagined slights being constantly dragged up at every possible opportunity. Family tensions can ruin what should be happy occasions turning weddings, funerals and birthday parties into a minefield of black looks, whispered words and disrespectful remarks both obvious and subtle. Blood is supposed to be thicker than water but sometimes we could really do without certain family members trying to prove it!

I can feel you. I guess all families have their own issues.

You said it all, we cannot chose our family. I am glad that I live in another country, I am not obliged to meet my only family left, my brother.

Sounds like I'm a lot like some other myLotters. I have relatives and then I have family. My family consists of my husband, our kids and grandkids, and some people who aren't blood related to us at all.

Because blood is thicker some issues can be resolved too. My in-law brothers and sisters were not in talking terms for years but by the grace of God they came together before last Christmas and now they are happy like they were in their childhood.

Sadly it happens most often after a parent becomes needy and gets worse when they pass on. It's tragic. I may be wrong but in my opinion every parent should formulate a will of what they want as they get to that age of neediness and then what they want to give to whomever after passing and then it should be shared with all family members so that all have a clear idea of what mom or dad wants done.

Sometimes things can be difficult among families but then that has always been the problem you can distance yourself from unwanted friends and never see them again but family will always be family and eventually, you will have to deal with them. That is another reason that I chose not to remain in Latvia not only the painful memories I would have but even though I have lots of relatives there no one of them would give me the time of day.

When we first married we moved hundreds of miles away which was probably a very good thing at the time. Mostly we all get along very well now so we're very lucky in that respect.

I'm not good with my family. They never even spelt my name right, they were never there, they would miss my birthdays and most missed my wedding. To me family isn't better than friends because they havent showed in any way they were

I don't have enough time or room to write about my issues here.
