Questions for Today: Animals In Your Home

Have you ever had to call for an exterminator or animal control service to have a critter removed from your home? If you did what type of animal was it? I had to call for a animal control service to remove squirrels who built nests inside of the lattice on my front porch. The squirrels were able to enter through some loose roof shingles. Fortunately, everything was taken care of without a hitch. Now for my other question about animal home invasions. What would be the worst animal to have in your home? My vote would be for a bat. They just creep me out! And your vote would be.... Photo- popsci.com

Yes, I had to call twice, the first time about 10 years ago and then again last year, invasion of yellow hornets, big dangerous and noisy. I think the worst would be cockroaches, hard to get rid of them.

@dgobucks226 Hornets were capable to make a small hole and they were making a big nest under the roof, just above the window of our main bathroom. When I opened the window they came inside. Those were very big hornets almost 1 inch long.

I had a hornet's nest inside my grill one year. Like some birds I guess they will make their nests in some unusual places. Oh, I would not like to see cockroaches in my home either.

@LadyDuck Oh my! I've been stung by a wasp which was very painful although they say hornets hurt humans even more because of their venom. And they can sting multiple times which happened to me. We have many yellowjackets where I live during the summer. They go after the nectar I feed the hummingbirds. Glad I am not allergic to their venom.

Yes, I don't like mice/rats either. And they are so quiet when they appear they freak me out. I have to set up traps each winter.

My vote would be cockroaches. They defy exterminators. I've had bats too. Not fun when one is suddenly flying at your head when you're in bed. Getting it outside was a lot of 'fun'.

@dgobucks226 I had a bird fly into the house too. Poor thing, he couldn't find his way out. It took a lot to get him through the door again. He came in through the window where the fan was.

Wow, yes a bat in the house would be shocking. I had a bird fly in my house once and that was not fun trying to get it to fly out again. Cockroaches would be a bad one for sure!

I've had cockroaches in my home. I did have a exterminator to get rid of ants and cockroaches. I also had a possum under the house, but we didn't call animal control for it. I also had fleas in my home. When I was growing up, we had a squirrel nest in our attic. Bats are scary.

@dgobucks226 I think the possum left on its own. My uncle's cat gets fleas (mostly from a so called friend of his) so my cat got them from his cats.

Squirrels can be a real nuisance once they are settled in. I had to have a animal control service trap them. Cockroaches are bad news for sure. Did the possum just leave on its own? Fleas, oh no. I imagine they could get on clothing or hop a ride on pets to get inside.

moths have been our current problem. We are waiting for another three years to see if this epidemic has been treated properly or not. (caused by one of our housemates, my young relative.)

Moths would be a hard one to get rid of. I've had trouble with pantry moths from time to time from opened flour.

@dgobucks226 Heard that quite a few people around got them moths just like us, due to the weather (rain constantly that year, and humid). Made me feel better, knowing that our house was not the only place that suddenly having such a problem.

True story. When I lived in New Jersey, many years ago, we had a bat fly into our house. We didn't call Animal Patrol. But it took three of our neighbors to remove the bat from our home. A little over a decade ago, my mother did call Animal Patrol a year or so after we first moved to Ohio. We had a family of possums I think (I don't recall) near the vent of the home. I don't remember the exact place, but it was enclosed and part of the home down below.

Oh my, a bat in your house, yikes! That would freak me out Good you were able to get it out. Their poop has fungal spores which cause a type of lung disease. Breathing in those spores can be dangerous to one's health. Btw: thanks for sharing that story. And I thought NJ was safe from bats

@dgobucks226 Yeah it was scary. My neighbors tried pool nets and brooms to get it out. It took three times to get it out. And was during the night too. Yikes! My pleasure.

I've had raccoon's and opposum's that I removed myself; and snakes. My cats took care of the mice. Of course, then there were the fire ants and I took care of them too @dgobucks226 . Don't know of a critter that I wouldn't try to handle.

Speaking of fire ants when I was at my Dad's condo in Florida I got rid of them but without some got onto my foot and ankles. Wow, did they hurt and I had marks on me for months. Pretty stupid on my part! Never tackle fire ants in flip flops and shorts

We've had birds inside before, and mice.... I'm happy you got those squirrels out of there, that could be destructive. I think I feel the same as you - I really hate bats.

I guess when it comes to bats, we're can be sure we "don't have bats in the belfry." When I had a cat the mice usually stayed hiding in my basement. Except once when my cat Spooky nabbed one who ventured upstairs

Oh, God, it's ugly. I never called them because I live in the city and probably because of that I did not have these problems. But people in my country call mainly because of the snakes, inside the country, in villages mostly. But, I have a question for you, why did you call for squirrels? They are beautiful and they running away, they are afraid. For a bat, I would fully understand you

They had made a home in the roof/gutter area and we wanted to remove them so they did not cause more damage or have babies. Coming across a Snake in my house would definitely startle me.
