My debit card may have been compromised

Has anyone else had this happen recently? My credit union called me, vaguely, twice in 6 hours to advise that VISA advised them that a bunch of card numbers "may have been compromised". They couldn't say for certain but they are re-issuing new cards with new numbers and we should all receive them by next Friday..... They gave me the option to keep my current debit card open, the one that may have been comrpomsied, or close it immediately and wait for the new card. I figured since I have a 4 day weekend coming up, and I definitely need my debit card to be spending money. But on the other hand, I COULD have used credit cards instead and paid off the balance later, just to be on the absolute SAFE side, but I decided to just keep It open and take my chances if it is compromised. I know my credit union will reimburse any fraudulent charges, but it still feels scary to not know whether or not it will be compromised or used. But, I would hate to use my credit card instead of debit. I like to spend the money I have! Have you had this happen recently?

I haven't had this happen...but not sure what to say. Like a few others have mentioned...could it be a scam?

No. It was my bank’s number I spoke with. Whether or not people have my debit card number on the other hand, I do not know!!

Are you sure this was not a scammer?

Oh gee what a pain! What are you going to do? I think I had to get a new card when Target had that big scandal a few years ago, and one time I had to get a new PP card due to someone getting ahold of my number and using it. Can you just withdraw cash to use?

Yikes. I am going to check my account a couple times a day in the interim and worse case scenario if I see charges that aren’t mine, I guess I’ll shut it down? It’s just hard with the small credit union because they are only open limited hours and no weekends!!!

Working for a banking institute I know this happens more often then we'd like to think. I would have let them shut down the card and go in in person to obtain a new one. And if you do online banking, change your passwords.

Hopefully, this was not a scammer pretending to be from your credit union. This has not happened to me from what I remember.

This hasn't happened to me. Not that I can remember at any rate. Hopefully, you get your card soon. We definitely do have to be careful.

I was going to ask the same question as @andriaperry, weird that they simply call to ask something like this. If you accept to use a compromised card they could refuse to reimburse in case of fraudulent usage. Did they explain well "what if" if you wanted to keep it open?

I've never had that happen but have a friend it happened to. The person who had her number was on a cruise, charging stuff with her number.

That's scary. I would have taken some money out for the weekend and closed the account and waited for the new card. No, I haven't had that happen.

Thankfully I haven't faced any issues with the debit card. I hate to use the credit card

yikes! that's scary I had a card scare but got lucky once. I had a debit card linked to a website I often bought from. but one week I had to get a new card and during that week, someone was using my account and tried to buy $600 worth of stuff. thankfully that was the one time that card information was wrong because I was still waiting on a new card.
