I always wondered why we'd have a month dedicated to African Americans but not for Native Americans and now I find out that November is supposedly dedicated to them but no one seems to know around here, everyone is preparing for Thanks Giving instead. Am I the only ignorant American? I would rather dedicate a month of their own choosing as Native American Heritage Month given all the atrocities they endured at the hands of the European immigrants especially by the decrees president jackson put forth. I found the link below because of a new article about a cave in Alabama during that tragic time of the Trail of Tears. I did a screenshot of a painting I saw on the internet.

I hope it will be changed so that people are made aware of the horrors those Native Americans went through.

You are so right! They should have their own month. My daughter had a best friend growing up who was Indian. She used to go with her friend to Pow Wow's and other things.

Those Pow Wow's should be national holidays in honor of those tribes.

I would want to know more about them before I'd go, it's about their religious beliefs and I'd hate to be uninformed @simone10

American Indian history is tragically sad and so many people still do not know about it. While in school we didn't learn much about American Indians and their heritage or the bad things done to them. It was all centered on Thanksgiving and the relationship between the first settlers and the peaceful gatherings. Not the real tragedies that actually took place.

So very sadly true. I didn't learn about the Trail of Tears until I was in high school and it was barely covered. It's a blemish on American History that teachers here don't care to teach.

I studied in history the atrocities perpetrated by the white European (mainly British and Irish) immigrants who settled in the New World, but I never heard of a Native Americans months. May be it did not even exist when I was a student. I see that it was started by President Bush in 1990.

Also the Spanish, they were ruthless. The conquistadors slaughtered Native American babies, women and old men every time they came upon a tribe, it is why so many south American Indians moved north.

@rebelann The Spanish and Portuguese conquistadores were also cruel. Turks also committed atrocities and not far back in time, during WWI.

Good point! I agree that it is one of the most important dedications we should have.

Working in an elementary school it is interesting to see the awareness that the kids in our area have. Fourth grade Social Studies often has information about the treaties, and how they were broken, as well as about various people who were immigrants. The students are outraged at the injustice they see. This tribe was moved here, then the pioneers wanted the land, so they were moved there, until gold was discovered. The kids just cannot comprehend how our government could be so unfair. Kids have good hearts. Adults not so much. We also have good teachers.

Yes, kids do have golden hearts but as they get older too many become jaded and greedy which is when they stop caring about most anything other than earning lots of money. There are many good teachers but teachers can only do so much and most parents are too busy trying to support their families and rarely have time to enforce any of those things teachers try so hard to instill in their students. It's really sad that it usually takes two paychecks to support a family of 4, I recall my dad did and mom made due with what he earned, she was a housewife.

I am a member of a native American tribe, and I never knew that November is dedicated to the First Peoples. What should they call it? "Red history Month"?

Wouldn't 'Red History Month' be more of an insult? I would love to see our government give the First Peoples a month of their own choosing to be designated as First Peoples Month and have ALL the media talk about those chiefs that tried so hard to protect their people from the atrocities brought on by the whites. Not enough is taught about the struggles your people went through to simply try to survive and it is something that needs to be brought to light. We have all kinds of monuments for victims of the holocaust and almost nothing for the First People, that's just not right.

It seems crazy that it is so less known. I do hope that more people are aware of it now through your post and word spreads.

I do hope word spreads, Native Americans have been stuck at the back of things for far too long.
