Do you think a poem has to rhyme?

When I first got into writing poetry I thought that all poetry has to rhyme and if it doesn't rhyme it's not really poetry. And most of what I've written in the beginning rhymed in some way. I no longer think this way and have written plenty of poems that do not rhyme.
Just because something rhymes does not automatically make it a poem. And just because something doesn't rhyme that doesn't mean it's not a poem.
It's the choice of words used, the wording of the lines, and the poetic techniques used that determine whether a piece of work is a poem or not.

I've read poems where rhymes seemed forced, like the words were used just for the sake of rhyming.

I write and have had some pieces published and I really don't like rhyming poetry--but when the rhyme is really well done and really serves the piece--it can be an effective tool

@divalounger I have poetry published on AuthorsDen, writing.com and some on HubPages. As I have not renewed my writing.com membership most of the poems I not visible to the public I believe. I've also published poetry books of my own and I've been published in some anthologies.

Poems don't need to rhyme. You pick your style and write it. Many famous poems don't rhyme.

I know.poems don't have to rhyme but I just find it much easier to.understand or write those that do.

Nothing wrong with writing rhymed poetry. It might make it easier to remember.

That's very true but I have to say I prefer poems that rhyme.

I used to prefer those as well but now I am equally leaning towards rhyming and non-rhyming poetry.

I love rhymes but I hate it when I am writing a rhymed poem and I can't come up with a rhymed line and first have to figure out what rhymes with the word in the previous line and then use that to write a new line. I prefer when the rhymed lines just flow out of me rather than me having to use the rhyming dictionary to figure out possible rhymes and then write lines with those words.

@lovebuglena I can relate to that. Sometimes I forgot what to write when I was thinking of a word that would rhyme to my poem.

Rhymes can make the poem easier to remember or even make it catchy.
