Jack Sprat...

Do you remember the old rhyme? "Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean... so betwixt the two of them they licked the platter clean" (Unknown, British) So it seems to be in real life as well. Let's take me. I'm insulin resistant meaning I need to watch my carbs ... but carbs are what I crave most. Pasta, bread, rice, rolls... oh how delightful it all is. But, surprisingly, I wonder if it isn't that "people crave junk food" but instead "people crave what's bad for them". And in most (but not all) cases "junk" food is bad for people. Cases in point. My mom should be eating higher salt, protein, and calories. Instead, she prefers vegetables and small portions. Probably also good for her, but not what she most needs. My friend's grandchild has Cystic Fibrosis. Because of how the illness effects his metabolism high fat, salt, and calorie are actually good for him. But he likes carrot sticks and apple slices. I recall my friend begging him to have a hotdog. "Are you sure you won't eat a hot dog?" But those examples just involve food. I can think of others like how people keep being drawn toward people and relationships that aren't healthy... Do you have any examples? I think that most of us crave unhealthy foods because they are addictive. We have become a very unhealthy society with unhealthy cravings.

@FayeHazel I think that a healthy person will have no cravings, just preferences.

My husband is diabetic and always craving sweets. He also prefers carbs vs. vegetables and I have to watch this when he is fixing himself something to eat because he will load up.

@FayeHazel Yes, they are. And all of the good stuff is loaded with carbs.

I grew up with nursery rhymes and know that one very well. I've also known a few Sprat couples in my time. It's great to know that food isn't going to waste and also because the platter has been licked clean, no need to wash up. Maybe they were the first eco warriors?

@FayeHazel You would think so, but I have noticed that there is no mention of children. I am wondering if it's because there would be no food for them to eat? Or is it because Mr & Mrs Sprat have eaten them?

@Orson_Kart Oh I didn't notice until you mentioned just now. I must have always assumed they were like me and wished to be childfree. Or maybe they gave them to the woman in the shoe

I tend to stick with healthy foods. I’m used to them and don’t crave junk food at all.

@FayeHazel It’s easy to break bad habits, at least much easier than quitting smoking was for me.

@DianneN Ah I'm happy you have been successful - and that you were able to stop smoking. I have always found it difficult with things like dietary practices. Though I haven't had any issues with drinking or gambling... other things where people have difficulty stopping sometimes.

I think it is a matter of habit, I used to like sugary things a lot but since I have cut down on sugar now I can't stand very sweet things.

That is true, it seems like when one takes a break from sugar and then goes back to it, its too overwhelmingly sweet ugh.

I'm familiar with the rhyme and I wonder if your theory has some merit. I need to stay away from carbs yet I am always drawn to them.

Okay I deal with this taking care of Tony, when he was on chemo he gained weight, well because of me. You have to buy high fat, high sodium foods that she likes and cook them super fat, super calories. Say she liked mashed potatoes, Use real butter and whole milk to make them. Green beans? Add ham and butter. Broccoli? add cheese and butter. If she wants salads add boiled eggs, real bacon bits and full on fat dressing. breakfast bacon and eggs. You will learn how to get the protein in there, the fat is the easy part.

Yay for you! Good job with Tony there. Those are some brilliant ways to sneak in calories. Thanks for the advice

I definitely agree with that, as you already know from previous discussions. It's good to see other comparison's though than just my side. For me, I just thought it was like that for picky people, while others liked most foods lol.
