Why teachers do this?

My son is worried, tomorrow he is going to have a history test and only today the teacher told the class. Why let the students know only in the day before? He had classes during the all day, so he could only study after dinner. I gave him a help, making questions and pointing out the most important things but he is still worried. We are near the end of the school year and this test is important. In the last history test he got 94 in 100 points but history is not is favorite subject. I know that tomorrow he will be nervous and anxious and this was unnecessary. I hate when teachers do this. Did you have surprise tests when you were at school? Picture: my son history book

I had friends for lunch last Saturday and they were telling me that in Italy they do the same right now, surprise tests that sometimes are announced via sms late Saturday evening.

@nela13 She said that the problem is that they ask things that must be done on the Internet, if you are away from home and did not take with you your tablet or notebook it is a problem. They have to go back home.

@LadyDuck really?! That is odd. My son told me that the test went well but he doesn't have the results yet.

Via SMS?! Well, but in those cases at least they have the Sunday to study.

@raski, college teachers like me never do that because their schedules are usually 2-3 days interval; others once a week meting meaning 3 hours class per meeting.

I always liked learning about history. Although I would not want to teach it to a class, lol.

In most cases we didn't have surprise tests. My Danish teacher did it sometimes, but most of the other teachers didn't.

This is not good considering your son young. It should be better for that teacher to give 3 days before the exam goes to condition the minds of the students. There will be pressure and mental block for the test is just few hours to review/ study. I am a teacher and I never had this kind of announcement, brutal. That teacher should be evaluated accordingly.

a 94/100 in a subject that is not his favorite is really good. the short timing sucks. the most you can do is help him prepare and remind him to relax and focus.

I love history... Well, I think teachers do this because they know that they have taught the students whole year/semester so they can get a surprise test. But no harm if they tell the students earlier so they can prepare even well.

As a former teacher I did give short little 5 question surprise quizzes on occasion. It was more to make sure they were paying attention than a major test. And having recently discussed the topic anyone doing their work did well. Now, a surprise test without little notice I would not have or ever did that.
