To Be Honest or Not To Be Honest, That is the Question

People get so mad at me for being honest. I really don`t like hurting peoples feelings or making them mad. Would people like to me to be dishonest and say sweet things that are not true, stoke their ego, just to be liked? Be fake, fake and more disgusting fake all the time? Wanna know what makes people the maddest? When they whine about money and I ask "do you smoke?" Tony got lung cancer, stopped smoking cold turkey but he put that cigarette money in the bank, at the end of the year he had $3,600. Yeah! What will that money be spent on? His funeral. Just sayin....... what if he would have applied that money elsewhere, in 10 years $36,000 would have been what? I used to smoke but I quit 14 years ago, so how far did $50,000 go? At this point people hate me. Oh yes! I have been told "I really hate people who have the life I want." Then they really what to stab me when I say "Its all in what you are willing to give up to get what they want. So to be honest or not to be honest, that is the question.

Many don't appreciate how hard others have worked. I like Dave Ramsey's expression, "Live like no one else so you can live like no one else."

@andriaperry You might already know more than he does! I listen to him on the radio if I happen to be in the car at the right time. It is entertaining when people call in and their husband earns minimum wage and they are in debt because they Must send their kids to private school. He is good at bluntly stating the reality for them. ?? My guilty pleasure finding that entertaining. He does give thoughtful, helpful advice most of the time. He is quick to advise people to get rid of their vehicle in favour of a paid off beater. I think you have to look at what you will actually get for that car you have. I just hope people listen to his advice, but then think! He recommends NEVER owning a credit card. We happily used our points to fly to Florida. Worth it for us, we don't pay interest.

I like your honesty and I agree about money and smoking. And we all know about relationships etc that are bad and no amount of advice will change. Same whining different day, I usually avoid those it is a waste of time and energy. They just enjoy their misery or they are making it up, I am never sure which.

I want you to lie and say sweet things about me ok, really I would rather people be honest, maybe sugar coat it a little. Honest but not go out of the way to make people feel bad. Does that make sense? I do smoke and don't even want to think about all the money I have spent over the years. I do enjoy it, at least sometimes I really enjoy a smoke but a lot of times it is just habit or out of boredom. But yea the 35 years I have smoke I probably could have bought a lot of other things with all that money.

It's better to be honest, as long as you can do it in a way that is not rude. What gets me is when people are being "honest" but just use it as a guise to be rude and demeaning.

I have found that people on this site don't always want you to be honest. So it just depends on what the subject matter is. I'm usually honest; but I don't want to hurt someone's feelings either. I'm so sorry about Tony. One thing you've never said (at least as long as I've been here) is what relation he is to you? Spouse? Brother? Friend? Hugs! Why would people hate you? You are a likable person.

I did the same thing when I gave up smoking. I used to keep the money aside and then realized that I had wasted so much of it while I smoked. I actually did the very same thing when I bought a thermos and quit stopping to buy my coffee for work. At $500 I stopped putting the money in a jar and haven't looked back. I have to be honest, I wouldn't sleep at night if I wasn't this way. Its part of our J20T DNA I think.

To be honest, we would need to know what being truthful is, I think. Sometimes, we can think that we are being honest, but really, we are just stating our own opinion about something. How do we know we are being honest then, or not? What is honesty? Is honesty always the best policy, as they say? If we are religious, or Christian, we might connect truth and honesty to God. We might say that to be honest is to walk straight in the Lord, because the Lord is upright and truthful at all times, and when you are not aligned to his truth, you cannot really be honest then either, for truth lives in honesty, and honesty finds its home in truth. If we are not religious with that type of a guidestick to compare ourselves against, just how would we really ever know what is the truth, and what is honesty? It would be then more of an ethical or a philosophical debate, I would think, or maybe, we might use our conscience as a yardstick to see if we are feeling good about something that we have stated, as being our honest opinion about something. If I say that I have no fashion sense, for example, is this honesty, a true assessment of myself, or more just a cop-out type of a response, because I do not want to assess someone's dress sense as either good, or bad. For me to say someone looks nice in a green dress, I would not be sure if I honestly meant it, or if I was just being nice, or not. I just don't know myself well enough to know when I am being honest or not, without my using a yardstick standing next to me. I use the truth of "God" to do this mostly, as I do not know what my own truth is. I honestly do not know myself, at this stage in my life. I do not know who the "real" me is, or even if there is one. I liked what you said there about this though. If I am not me, who am I? If I am not yet the real me, what, and who am I now? Sorry about the long response. I constantly battle with what honesty and truth is in my life, and what they really are, and if they have any real value, where does that value really come from, and how I can live from them more consistently and truly, or how I can be more truthfully honest, or honestly truthful.

@andriaperry It might be for you, but not all of us have common sense. Or the same type of common sense. For example: My wife gave me a plastic bottle, and told me to shake it the other day, which I did. When she came back to me, a bit later, she said to me, "Have you got no common sense?" "Didn't you know that you have to fill that bottle with water to the mark indicated, then shake the mixture, so that it is then combined, so that I can make some pancakes with it?" I had been shaking the bottle with just powder in it. I have no common sense.

Did you just brainwash me? Honestly, if you need money and you have a bad habit, like smoking, stop buying them and you have money. Its as simple as that. All common sense.Has nothing to do with god. Its just an honest to goodness answer.

Hmm. There is a way to be polite and honest. As long as the person in question not trying to hurt someone's feelings or make someone agree with them ... I enjoy honesty. It's a good point about smoking. It's a dangerous "hobby" or "habit" and expensive. But then, so many things are. Sodas, sugar, fast and junk food, - all not good for you but all things people commonly indulge in. I'm not supporting smoking by any stretch, but when a "smoker" friend of mine mentioned this I realized that I too induldge in unhealthy stuff

@andriaperry I wouldn't say I took it as you were "picking on" smokers. But your example does include smoking so....??? I think the rest of my point agreed with the point you're making. I know I had a friend once - she both smoked and drank heavily. I do neither ( but I admit I have other habits like going out to eat and buying lots of food goodies) - and she got angry at me once for buying a new pair of jeans. "I have to go without, because I have children, and here you are with your new jeans" she had said. It was true she had 2 kids in the home at the time. But she also smoked and drank a lot. Both are expensive. If she would have even cut back with either - she could have easily afforded new jeans, as well.
