I rode a bike in France - well, sort of!

I lived on a farm when I was young and although I could ride a horse from a young age, I never learnt to ride a bike until well into my teens. I don’t know if this had anything to do with it but I was never much good on a bike and lack of practice didn’t help. The few times I was able to ride, I mostly ran into whatever I looked at. If I looked at pot-holes in the road, I was almost bound to run into them. We had three bikes on the boat and Vince and one of the others would ride off next morning looking for a boulangerie where they could buy baguettes for breakfast. We were tied up at Nevers where there was a nice flat area of concrete so I decided I would have a little ride. I didn’t trust myself on the paths along the canals. I was doing quite well for a while but then got a bit too close to some steps, focussed on them as something to avoid and promptly ran straight into them! I tumbled off very gently but still had a big bruise next day. Are you one of those people who always bruise very easily?

I learned to bike at around age 13, not only ride but I know how to assemble and fix bikes. I'm not really very fond of horses, I remember getting kicked by a pony lol.

@JudyEv another thing with being able to assemble is you could choose the parts you like, the brands and put them all together and not just rely on stock store bought. It's good only so long as we have the time.

It's good if you can fix your own bike. You would save a lot of money by being able to do your own repairs.

I learned to ride the bike when I was in my early teens and loved to go around the old race track. It was fund to really ride it during those times. Unfortunately I was not able to carry that habit when I grew up until today. I really have no idea if I could still ride a bike today as my legs are wobbly already and I forgot how it feels to balance it anymore.

I'm sure you'd still be able to ride as they say you never forget. I think it is a bit different if you've never really learnt to ride well in the first place.

A fall like that would have put me off too. I quite like the photos too. I was having fun till I fell off. haha. But even then I wasn't hurt.

@judyev You do realise that only the winner of the Tour de France gets to wear a yellow top? Let’s just be thankful that your cycling and my driving were done in different parts of France - I think I might have caused a few heart attacks when I tried to go round roundabouts the ‘wrong’ way.

@xFiacre We made a slight mistake in Austria in our motor-home and accidentally cut across the path of a car. We had four Austrians in the car all shaking their fists at us. We were quite bemused really as that wouldn't happen in Australia. Mostly you'd get a toot and perhaps a finger but no fist-shaking. :)

When we had the motor-home in France, we found it really hard to go round a roundabout the wrong way because the roads lead you into them so that you're heading in the correct direction. It was the left turns we found very confusing.

Perhaps when I was still learning to ride a bike, I always had these bruises. I think it is the best way to have an exercise on a daily basis.

Yes, I have always bruised easy. I was about ten years old when I taught myself how to ride a bike. I had a lot of scratches and skinned knees but I was so proud of myself. Here, most kids are riding bikes around 5 years old so I was a little older when I learned.

I once rode too slowly and touched the curb at an odd angle. I fell off my bike and broke my arm. :-( This happened in front of a shop. The son of the owners was a pupil of mine. They helped me get up and to the doctor's.

Oh dear, hope the bruises have faded! I love my bike; people used to jokingly ask 'Do you live on that thing?' I use it practically every day. Walking seems so unbearably slow in comparison. You do have to look further ahead at where you want to go, and not focus on closer obstacles.
