Now THAT is a tin of baked beans!

We’ve recently finished a tour of the Canal Lateral a la Loire in France. Eight of us hired a house-boat for twelve days. We have shared many good times over several decades. When we stay together, it is usually Vince who cooks breakfast which is usually bacon and eggs. One man, the one on the right in the photo, loves his baked beans. It is a standing joke within the group that Vince hates baked beans and refuses to heat them so, if Kim wants baked beans for breakfast, he has to heat them himself. We were in a shop along the canal looking for baked beans when we came across this monstrous tin. We didn’t buy it as we didn’t think we could eat that many even in the time we were there. We also wouldn’t have had room to store it in the fridge. Do you have baked beans in your country and, if you do, do you like them?

It's huge, isn't it? It would take me weeks to eat that much.

That looks like a can that someone who caters for a living would buy. Although, I have to confess, that I have bought such a large sized canned for making my homemade baked beans to take to family barbeques in years gone by. I always add some ground beef and some other yummies which everyone loves and I always go home with an empty container. My husband and I do like baked beans, we don't eat them often maybe every 3 weeks or so. Even a small can is too much for just the 2 of us these days.

It's probably meant as a catering pack. I can imagine that with a few additives they'd be even more popular.

Breakfast without baked beans simply is not breakfast. I am not particularly keen on them but one spoonful is enough for me. It is a staple of the British diet almost like comfort food!

That's what our friends think - it's not breakfast without baked beans. :)

I love baked bean, but baked beans do not love me. They give me gas in the worst way, so I generally try to avoid them. But they are very popular with cookouts and barbecues, and you can find them at almost every picnic and holiday celebration. Thank goodness you did not buy that giant tin of beans. Can you imagine the flatulence that would have permeated the air after eating all them beans?

@JudyEv Haha I love your sense of humor! I can picture in my mind everybody sticking their butts in the water and propelling the boat!

If we'd all had them for breakfast then faced the same way, we'd have had a jet-propelled house-boat! And there is a saying in Australia 'Beanz meanz fartz'. :)

You can find tins like that here in the warehouse clubs. Sometimes people cooking large quantities will buy those..or restaurants sometimes shop there.

I haven't looked to see how big those cans get here @JudyEv but I know that the can of jalapenos my friend buys at the local SamsClub warehouse is at least as big at that can.

I suppose they use the beans to make "Cassoulet", those beans are not baked, they are white beans cooked in tomato sauce. Baked beans are not used here, steamed beans yes, the small white called Cannellini, are good served with canned tuna and seasoned with olive oil and black pepper and some sliced onion rings.

@JudyEv If "baked beans" are beans stewed in a sauce, those are baked beans.

@LadyDuck I'd say that is the case - beans stewed in sauce.

They seemed the same as what we get in Australia although perhaps a bit paler. I guess 'baked' is just the term given to them.

@judyev I detest them. When we lived in Paris in the 80s we had the French version which were even worse - no colour or taste and they were hard. So, to satisfy a pregnant wife (my own of course, I don’t take to do with satisfying the pregnant wives of other men as a rule) I used to take a one hour metro ride, crossing Paris to get to Marks & Spencer to buy Heinz Baked Beans.

These seemed to be paler than what we're used to. Luckily for Vince I didn't have any cravings while I was pregnant. Probably luckily for me too.
