Trapdoors and handles

Our son joined us in West Cork, Ireland, for three nights and it was great to have him there. His room was reached through a trapdoor which had a counterweight attached to it. I thought this was a very clever idea. Once you pushed the door up a certain way, the weight prevented it from falling back on your head. There was also a very kinky handle on the trapdoor. It was in the shape of a dog. Another door handle in the bathroom was a simple piece of wood but I thought it looked really nice. Some houses are really suited to quirky furnishings, aren’t they?

The granary of my grandparents had a trapdoor like that, with a counterweight attached.

@JudyEv It works very well, often the heavy garage doors have a counterweight.

I haven't seen a counterweight like that before but it's a very clever idea and works well.

Interesting how some of these ideas fall out of use, even though they'd work fine today. Not that I have a trapdoor!
