Childhood memories: Did you have certain foods you loved when your parents went out to dinner?

When my parents left my brother and me at home, and went out to dinner, there were certain food that they would "serve" us, thinking they would pull one over on us as they ate their steaks and baked potatoes and salads, with flaming crepes for dessert. But we, the kids, knew that those were the best nights of the week, because we would get to eat our favorite foods, including frozen pizza, TV Dinners (turkey with stuffing was to die for), and my personal favorite, chicken pot pies. The other day, I bought myself a chicken pot pie for dinner, just so I could take a walk down memory lane. Of course, it was delicious. The cost was $1.25 at Safeway. Do your remember what your favorite dinners were when your parents would leave you behind with the maid, butler, or baby sitter?

My parents had us in the local kids church group on Tuesday nights. They would go out to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner and we would eat Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and hot dogs and think we were having a treat!

Yep. Why do parents try to force "good" food on their kids The Humanity.

We had sandwiches. Usually tomato, from the garden. I recognize the pot pie from your photo.

Tomato sandwiches? Were they trying to starve you? What did you think of them? Could you at least add bacon, lettuce and cheese?

My parents never went out to dinner leaving my brother and I at home. They waited until we were old enough to behave and they brought us with them.

@TheHorse We did not eat pizza until I was about 16 years of age. We northern Italian did not eat pizza back in those times. I think you do not know the habits of other countries. Our parents NEVER left us at home with food and flee. We went out with them when we were no more young kids.

It is something we still do when there are not leftovers or something simple to go after but if my mom goes somewhere or if we need a lightmeal before a concert or something we like to have hot pockets or frozen burritos. I loved frozen burritos as a kid. Pot pies are amazing, but little kid me hated them until I watched Sweeney Todd and well...that just really proves I'm a weirdo if that movie got me to eat pot pies haha

@DesirousDreamer I'll sometimes defrost just a bit of an ex-girlfriend to make gravy. I add a tad of extra flour and less garlic and onions when it's one of the "mean" ones.

I am actually over 40 (barely, of course) and can remember my favorite "parents gone" meals with great detail. Have you experienced the joy if a "TV Dinner"?

Often it was pizza. That was the one thing that the three of us could agree on.

I rarely order pizza, but its difficult to look a pizza in the face and not eat part of it.

I remember among my favorites was Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup and me sitting at the table with my favorite book Disney's Cinderella by my side or one of my favorite Chef Boy Ar Dee meals heated up.

I liked Campbell's soups too. But I could never stomach Chef Whatever's stuff--too sweet.

I don't remember my parents ever going out to eat without us. But later in life, I enjoyed those turkey TV dinners and pot pies.

Heh. I wonder if my parents knew that my brother and I cackled with glee when they went out to dinner. No more chicken livers on toast or healthy lentil soup.

I don`t remember them going out for dinner but Friday night was jink food night, either hamburgers or hot dogs and french fries. My older brother used to take us for ice cream on Sundays.

I'm glad my had a junk food night! To this day, I still sometimes get a "what the f*ck" twinkle in my eye and go to McDonalds or KFC. It hasn't killed me yet.

My parents did not go out for dinner when we kids were still young. We went with them though in a snack cafeteria in the market and we were served hot chocolate and rice cake or fried sweet potatoes. They were delicious.

When our parents were "sick of the kids," they would treat themselves to a fancy dinner and let us have what they thought was gruel. But we actually savored those evenings.

I don't remember what we ate when Mom and Dad went out to eat without us. But I remember Saturday mornings. They would leave their shrimp plates behind and I would eat what was left from the shrimp's tale. It was the only time I got shrimp. They didn't make it for us. I didn't get a regular serving of shrimp until I left home.

I don't recall being left much or even what we ate. I like a night on my own now though so I can indulge in some very unhealthy food.

I loved the pot pies and pizza on the nights when my parents went out which was often. As for me I didn't leave my kids home, I took them with me and enjoyed their lively company.
